Gregory Martin Friscia, it is with unspeakable sadness that we write of his untimely death at age 17. The son of loving and devoted parents David and Karen Friscia. He died Sunday morning, March 24, 2013, from head trauma sustained in a skateboarding accident. Greg was a model student in the senior class of Xavier College Preparatory High School. He was very excited about graduation and was looking forward to attending a top ranked college this coming fall. Everyone at Xavier had the privilege of watching him blossom into a wonderful young man who was admired by his classmates and respected by his teachers. He was a scholar and an athlete. The school's swimming and water polo teams have lost a star who truly understood what it means to be part of a team. He was Co-captain of the water polo team and played all four years. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and loved animals and the outdoors. Sadly, Greg left behind a loving brother and his best friend, Matt, 19, a sophomore at UCLA. Matt will forever miss his little brother. Greg was a friend to many. He had a great sense of humor and a positive, upbeat attitude towards everything and everyone. He had a zest for life and a beautiful smile, which brightened everyone's day. Greg will leave a lasting hole in all of our hearts and lives, and the shock of his loss will profoundly impact all who were touched by his enthusiastic, fun-loving, and mischievous spirit. His family hopes that our memory of Greg will inspire future Xavier students to be well rounded, intellectually curious, kind scholar athletes. We are grateful for the joy and love he brought into the lives of his family and friends. A memorial service was held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Sacred Heart Church, 43775 Deep Canyon Road, Palm Desert, 92260. A reception followed after the service at the Xavier College Preparatory High School gymnasium. The family urges those who would like to honor Greg's memory to donate to the Gregory Friscia Memorial Scholarship Fund, which has been established at Xavier. For website donations, go to Xavierprep.org.

I have never met Greg nor have I been to Xavier however through researching Xavier for an event (as I am part of the Ignatian Family here in Canada), I stumbled on this website through a Youtube video of the memorial on Xavier's Youtube channel.

Greg seemed to be such as lovable and intelligent young man. To have gotten a 5 on an AP exam in his freshman year is an outstanding achievement! I've only taken 1 AP course now in my senior year and I doubt I'll even get a 4.

Then to hear about nearly 2000 faces at his funeral just shows what an inspiring individual he was. He obviously created a great deal of joy among his peers.

May God bless the family in this advent season and may you recognize that your son is an instrument of mercy that will shine on forever even in those who never knew him.

Dear Friscia Family,
I wanted to say hello and tell you we think of you and Greg on many occasions. This summer when we went to Paris Caroline lit a candle for Greg in the Notre Dame cathedral. We met Madame Cooper and the kids on the French exchange program for a few hours and they too left a tribute for Greg in Paris. They put a lock labeled with Greg 's name on one of the bridges. You are in our hearts.

Dear Dr. Friscia,Karen and brother Matt. I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your wonderful Greg. I'll never forget his wonderful smile and our son Joey who graduated with Matt at Xavier was devastated. Joey was involved in a similar skateboarding accident 6 months ago that sent him to the ER and when he heard this he cried for two days and hoped and prayed for Greg. Your overwhelming turnout at your service showed how much he was loved. Joey cried and said I will never ride another skateboard.

Dear Friscia Family,

Words cannot possibly express the deeply felt sadness and sympathy over the loss of your darling son, Greg. My children attended Xavier and daughter Hunter was good friends with him. However, he touched the lives of people all over the world who never even had the chance to know him in life as they included him in their prayer circles via FB. As he communed with God, he was already changing the lives of others and will continue to do so exponentially. What an amazing and beautiful soul to have made such a positive difference in this world during his brief time here and whose joyful spirit will remain with us forever to keep that light shining. We are all blessed to have been touched by Greg, and you, his family, will always be in our hearts and prayers...

Most Sincerely,
JoAnn Dutton

Dear Karen, David, and Matt;
I am so saddened by this! THe outpouring of love for you and the family, and the overwhelming attendence at the service on Wednesday are a testament to Greg and to you as his parents and family.

I've been looking at all the photos of Greg as a young boy at Marywood from kinder to fifth. That infectious grin is burned in my memory.

You are all loved!
