Memories and Condolences
for Sheila Lukins

Not sure what to say?

Recently discovering you is a delight. Today I learn you passed away well over a decade ago. Personally this is indeed a sad displeasure.

Nonetheless, finding you with Joan Nathan has brought an enthusiasm to spend more time in the kitchen with love.

Should I find the over drive to make ChickenMarbella as you did, with the deep appreciation of it with fruit, I will be so ever grateful to you.

And I will remember you and wishing I could have had the privilege to have met you personally in this life time.

Thanking you, at any rate, for your cooking talent and contribution to the table.

For Sheila...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

For Sheila, a much loved neighbor of Sag Harbor. We were very glad to count you as our culinary friend. You bring smiles to our faces every time your name is evoked. Your sparkling glint will be a treasured memory. Your perfectly chosen, housegift will be cherished always. Thank you for your many culinary contributions that will live on in many, many households across the nation. Celebrate!!!

For years I cooked with Around the World. I still make the jerk marinade and ginger cookies every month. When we moved to the Bahamas I could only take a few cook books with me. I took Celebrate. From lemon curd to chicken wings, that book has everything I need. It is my bible, my guide to dinner parties, holidays and special dishes for any occasion. Love the ethnic menus, especially the morrocan dinner. I always looked forward to her recipes in Parade. Recipes that always worked.

Shiela left us too soon. I will miss her fresh ideas but will treasure the recipes she left us. God bless her family and her memory.

I knew Ms Lukins from a 'cherry trip' I had the pleasure to escort her on a few years ago when she visited Northern Michigan. She was gathering information on a new book that was to feature cherry recipes. She was a gracious soul. So very kind to someone she did not know. So full of lfie. I was surprised at her small stature, but she filled it with so much love of life. I will forever remember the day that I spent as Sheila Lukins chauffer with fond memories. I will miss her each Sunday when I read the Parade Magazine and every time I pass a cherry orchard. Betty Renner (Petoskey, Michigan)

My deepest sorrow in the loss of your mother, wife, and to the world a wonder inspiration. I met Sheila and Julee many years ago when they were promoting their Silver Palate products- oh my they were wonderful, both Sheila and Julee plus their product. Sheila always took time to meet with me when I traveled to NY for buying trips- she even marked the 'must try" recipes in the Silver Palate Cookbook- I treasure and use that book so often. She truly is the Julia Child of today.

I was a young mother 20 years ago wehn I learned to cook - My first cookbook was The Silver Palate Cookbook. Since that first recipe I was hooked on her recipes and ideas and truly just everything. I have collected all of her cookbooks and have made hundreds of recipes of hers over the years. Just today, I made her pizza crust. Thank you to her family for sharing her with us all of these years. I will miss her and her cooking inspiration greatly.

Thank you to Ms. Lukins, who opened up a world of flavor combinations to those of us who were bored cooking dishes from single ethnic cultures. I have most of her cookbooks and have used them often to rave reviews. I especially enjoyed "Around the World" and her recent "Ten". Her talents as a food visionary and chef will be missed. My condolences to her friends and family.

She is missed already, but her legacy remains within her creative and spectacular everlasting recipes.Condolences to the entire Lukins' Family and especially at this Holiday Time. I met Sheila when she was in town for a book signing in 1997 - the USA cookbook. I also brought along my old, food-stained copy of the All Around the World cookbook for her to sign that day and I was touched by how genuinely happy she was to sign such a messy book! She was delightful, her recipes will always be loved, and I am sad to hear of this tragic loss. My best to her family.

The Silver Palate was the most fun, delicious cookbook ever written in my opinion. It was a favorite of myself and my best friend who sadly passed away from brain cancer as well 9 years ago. I still have my original cookbook that my best friend left me a message in. It says, "I love this cookbook!" Love Girlfriend. Shelia truly inspired a generation of new cooks to get in the kitchen and have fun!

To the daughters, grandchildren and siblings be comforted in the love and support from family and friends.

God understands our saddness when we loose a loved one. When you go to him and prayer and tell him how you feel, he listens.

"To my sayings do give ear, O God; Do understand my sighing. Do pay attention to the sound of my cry for help, O my King and my God, because to you I pray." (Ps 5:1, 2)

May all of you draw comfort in knowing that 'Our God cares for us individually and that he will swallow up death forever.' And as recorded at Psalms 37:11.29 "The meek ones themselves will possess the earth. And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace. The righteous will reside forever upon the earth." We are looking forward to the time when Our God will bring about peacefull conditions here on earth for lovers of righteousness to enjoy. May all of you continue to draw close to Him and his son Jesus Christ.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Lukins' girls on the loss of your dear and talented mother. The Silver Palate is one of my most treasured and used cookbooks. I have always received rave reviews for any recipe prepared from that book. My pages are torn and stained. While living in Tokyo a Japanese woman served the Cold Strawberry Soup from The New Basics and I immediately ordered the book from the American Club Bookstore. Now 15 years later I am still serving that soup on hot, humid days in Florida.
Thank you Sheila Lukins for your wonderful inspiration. May you rest in peace and may your family have peace knowing the lives that you touched.

It was in Philadelphia, 1993, when I moved into my first apartment after college. I equated having my own kitchen with knowing that I needed to cook and not just assemble. The only cookbook I bought as my culinary arsenal was "The New Basics." Sixteen years later, it is still my main reference. I loved Ms. Lukins' work and her spirit. "In thy presence was fullness of joy." Psalm 16:11. Rest, lovely Sheila.

Those we love are always with us their laughter and their wisdom, their advice and thoughtfulness are gifts of love that are ours to keep. Although I don’t know the family I would like to send, my condolences to the family. May the tender mercy that God has always shown be with your family now so you will know that you are not alone and may the prayers of others help in some small way to bring you strength, comfort and courage each day . Many words will be expressed, yet we know God can and will express and provide to you and your family everything that is needed to care and sustain your hearts at this sad time. -. Isaiah 41:10,13.

I offer my sincere condolences to your family. I was drawn to write to you because I too experiment with food and love creating new and wonderful dishes which I consider to be works of art. The bible speaks of a time, at Micah 4:3,4 where peace and security will rule over the earth and each one will "sit under his own vine and his own fig tree". I love the thought of forever being able to enjoy food and drink the way our creator intended! May the God of all comfort be with you and your family.

Like many others I was sadden to read about Sheila's death. My grand daughter loves to cook and Sheila was an inspiration. Even though I never met Sheila personally I can imagine her smile preparing a dish. I can also tell she was loved and left many dear love ones behind with wonderful memories. Despite this tragic lost there is still hope. Yes, Jesus said at John 5, 28 and 29 "Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life." Imagine her cooking under perfect conditions and taste buds.

The Silver Palate cookbook changed the way many women entertained. Thank you for lending your mom to us and her wonderful ideas for cooking and entertaining. So sad for your loss. May the Source of Peace be with all who are mourning.

To Sheila Lukins Family:

I have just lost a dear friend to brain cancer and my son-in-law has had it for two years. My heart goes out to you as the death of a loved one is not easy to understand. Please know that there is a time coming when death will be no more and when all tears will be gone forever. Revelation 21:4

The best tribute I can give to Sheila is that her books and recipes have been passed on to our two daughters who love them as much as we do! She was a blessing to our generation of cooks.

The Silver Palate Cookbook gave me many happy hours of pleasure reading as well as happiness for my family when they got to be the recipients of the cooking inspired by her book. Still one of her finest creations was her daughter Annabel who never ceases to amaze and inspire me. My deepest condolences to her entire family.
