Gloria Poindexter Obituary

GLORIA ALICE POINDEXTER Gloria Alice Poindexter, 80, went to be home with her Lord and Savior on October 29, 2025, in her home after a short battle with lymphoma. She was born on September 5, 1945, to her parents, Delbert and Pearl (Meader) Gilbow, in Odessa, Texas. They moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, where her dad worked as a mechanic at a gas station they owned. They then moved to Rangely, Colorado, where her dad changed professions to work for Chevron Oil. She was the baby of the family, being 16 years younger than her sister, Betty, and 12 years younger than her brother, Delbert. She grew up playing with her many beloved pets and friends she made living in the Chevron Oil Camp. When she graduated from high school, she attended Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangely for two years before transferring to Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado, where she obtained her teaching degree. She taught elementary and high school in Dinosaur, Colorado, until she met the love of her life, Donald Poindexter, who also worked in the oil fields. They were set up on a blind date by some of their friends. It was on May 17, 1972, that they wed at the Meeker, Colorado, courthouse in a dress that her mother made for her. She and Don soon started a family and welcomed a son, Michael Poindexter, and then a daughter, Misty Lynn (Poindexter) Goerzen. Don's job took them to many different places to live, which included Rifle, Rifle & DeBeque, Colorado, Liberal, Kansas, Tioga, North Dakota, and finally settled down in Buffalo, South Dakota, where they lived up until their children left for college. Gloria then taught several children in a "home school" setting in her home to keep her occupied during the "empty nest" time of her life. They eventually wanted to move to a warmer climate, so Don put in a request to transfer to Ingleside, Texas, to finish his career in the oil field. He took an early retirement and then became a prison guard, which took them to Dalhart, Texas. They were always very active in their church community, whatever town they lived in. When Don fully retired after working 10 years in the prison system, they decided to move to Newton, Kansas, to be close to their youngest grandchild and help their daughter with babysitting. It is there that they settled down for the long haul. Gloria had numerous friends in her church and attended several Bible studies with friends at Newton Bible Church. They will miss her dearly. Gloria loved watching old movies, collecting dolls, and had quite a collection of pillows and quilts. Gloria is survived by her husband, Don Poindexter, 85, of Newton Kansas; her son Michael Poindexter and his wife Shelly, her daughter Misty (Poindexter) Goerzen and her husband Paul Goerzen; four grandchildren, Eliza Lucero, Josiah Poindexter and his wife Allison (Weidner) Poindexter, Drew Goerzen and his wife Rachel (Mohr) Goerzen, and Derek Goerzen; eight nieces, Sandra, Odie, Colleen, Natalla, Sheri, Robin, Betty and Debbie; seven nephews, Ricky, John David, Mark, Paul, Richard, Joe, and David; and one sister-in-law Betty Greenlee; cousins Gary and Barbara Oliver, Delores O'Connell, and Larry and Linda Oliver. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Delbert and Pearl (Meader) Gilbow; sister Betty (Gilbow) White; brother Delbert "Sonny" Gilbow; six brothers-in-law, Sanders, Jack, Willie, Jerry, Sonny, and Freddy; one sister-in-law, Francis, and their parents, Dawson and Josephine Poindexter. Gloria was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, and will be deeply missed by us all. A viewing is scheduled on Monday, November 3rd, at 9:30 am at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton, Kansas, with the funeral service to follow at 10 am also at Broadway Colonial, officiated by Reverend Larry Ediger.
