William "Billy" Heidelberg, owner of Heidelberg's Bar in Olde Town Slidell, passed away on December 15, 2018, at age 78. He was preceded in death by his parents Stephen McNair Heidelberg and Dr. Madeline Heidelberg Hare. He is the brother of Ruth H. Starr, Destin, FL; Dr. Stephanie Heidelberg, New Orleans, LA; Madalyn H. Smith, Ringgold, GA; Martha H. (Pete) Lewis, Slidell, LA; and Stephen M. Heidelberg, Slidell, LA. Billy was born in Jackson, MS, attended French Camp Academy, graduated from Taylorsville High School and attended Ole Miss. As a young man, Billy worked construction with his father and later enlisted in the National Guard. He worked for Chevron Oil Company as a mechanical engineer until retirement. He began his second career in 1991 when he purchased and opened Heidelberg's Bar. He could usually be found sitting at the bar with his friends and patrons regaling them with "slightly" exaggerated stories of his many exploits and experiences. Throughout his life, Billy was an avid adventurer and risk-taker, always seeking new and challenging endeavors. He went to Panama with the Merchant Marines, enjoyed scuba diving, sky diving, farming, sailing on his boat to Mexico and South America, woodworking, riding his motorcycle around the country, and traveling to places such as Russia, Europe, Cuba and Alaska. Football, especially the Saints and any team led by a Manning, were his favorites. Even though he had no children of his own, Billy loved kids and took special joy in being the "cool" uncle to his niece and nephews Ashley and Cy Fournet; James Starr; Sean, Eric and Casey Mackintosh; and Blake, Troy and Kelly Lewis. The family wishes to extend gratitude to the ICU nurses at Slidell Memorial and to Passages Hospice, and to his many doctors and their staffs that treated him during the past several years. A memorial celebration of Billy's life will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019, from 5-7 p.m. at Heidelberg's Bar, 147 Cousin St. in Slidell. Arrangements by Honaker Funeral Home, Inc., Slidell, LA.
