Of all the teachers I had in high school and university Bert was the most influential in my life... and I only had him as a teacher for one senior year. That is truly how inspiring he was. He constantly challenged me and all the students to inquire and think for ourselves and not 'feed back unconsciously what we were fed' in class... and inquiring and seeking to understand life has stayed with me to this day. Over the years our paths crossed several times and he remained that same beautiful man that was so full of life and deep insight. Far beyond what he taught scholastically in class, he was a great man and a great teacher in his example of how to live and really be alive while we are here; and how to care and take action. He lives on in my heart and all the hearts of those he touched.

Met Ross and Glenna when I was in high school and friends with Diane and David Gray. He was a huge influence on my life. Although he was never one of my teachers, I learned a great deal from him. He encouraged me to go to university, taught me to canoe and to ski. We shared some great discussions and I will never forget his love of helping others. A great man.

Dear Glenna, We are thinking of you today of your first Christmas without dear Bert and hope you are surrounded by your loving family. Bert's obituary told us so much about what a wonderful, generous man Bert was and your life together sounds like a true partnership. Please let us know when his memorial service will take place. Sending our love, Barry and Karen Dempster

Dear Glenna and family. Thinking of you as this is all so sudden and unexpected. My heart goes out to you with this great loss.

Bert you will be missed...thank you for your support and encouragement over the years and maybe most importantly, the manner in which you taught, which was to think critically and don't be afraid to ask questions. I have no doubt I speak for many others in thanking you for those gifts. Condolences to Glenna and family.

It was my pleasure, and an honour to have been a part of your life over the past two and a half years. I will miss our talks about birds and books, and tv shows and you sharing your memories with me. I will look for you in the trees when I look for the birds. Lynn xoxo
