Bill, you were my guiding light. You still are. All that you gave with true goodness and great humour, to so many, will continue to shine.

My sincere condolences to the family of Bill Witchel. He frequently shared how proud he was of his children and how lucky he was to have Valerie in his life.

Bill was leader of a Boy Scout troop I had the great luck of joining. Weekly, fun, skill building meetings, frequent weekend camping trips and hikes around the Toronto area - Snake Island, Darlington, Bruce Trail, and many others.

Highlights included a Canadian Scout Jamboree in PEI, an exchange with British Scouts (my first airplane trip), and a 6 week road trip across the Mid-West/Western US states. Bill did all the driving on this trip - approximately 6000 miles - did most of the picture taking, and led us upon countless adventures - Carlsbad Caverns, Dinosaur National, White Sands, Arches National, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Juarez-Mexico, Disneyland, Mount Rushmore, Hiking and sleeping in the Grand Canyon, Salt Lake, and many others.

Bill was extremely patient and kind - easy to say, hard to do - especially when crammed together with 13 teenagers in a hot van for days on end.

Later in life, thanks to his open-minded adoption of new technology, I was fortunate enough to conduct frequent email correspondence with Bill.

I think the most outstanding aspect of Bill's character was his ability, better than anyone I've met, to bring out the best in people. On the rare occasion when he wasn't around, things could devolve quickly. But, when he was around, we all wanted to be respectful and polite. It wasn't with fear. I am actually not sure how he did it, but I always felt and wanted to be good around him.

Thank you, Bill for everything you did for me. You made a huge difference in my life. You were like a father to me.
