John MacLeod Obituary

MacLEOD, John A. June 1, 1926 - October 7, 2017 John passed away peacefully on Salt Spring Island at the age of 91. He was predeceased by Norma, his wife of 64 years, in 2013 and by his youngest child Rob in 1990. He is survived by his children Janet, Bruce, Callum, Douglas, Laura and Megan, by grandchildren Andrew, Katie, Tom, Scott, Lyndon and Daniel, by six great-grandchildren, and by his sister Donalda. John grew up in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay) and Winnipeg. After a stint in the navy he was employed in the grain industry for eight years, followed by three years as a writer for the Manitoba Health Ministry. In the 1950s he travelled the Prairie Provinces for the non-profit Canadian Forestry Association, promoting conservation of natural resources. Then for 17 years he was a producer-commentator for the CBC's department of Agriculture and Resources in Winnipeg and then Calgary. In 1976 he finally left the city for the rural life he always wanted, ranching on a modest scale in Alberta's Porcupine Hills for another 17 years while writing columns for rural magazines as Norma, a home economist, worked as a substitute teacher in nearby towns. After heart surgery and a stroke, John and Norma retired to Mayne Island in 1992. Thanks to Rose, Barb and Kathy, and to the staff of Lady Minto/Gulf Islands Hospital. No service at his request.

John & Norma were our neighbors & friends in the Springpoint District west of Fort MacLeod. A muched loved couple of our community who were very missed when they moved over to the island. My last fond memory was my visit on Mayne Island with them for a few days. So sad to know they are both gone now! Condolences to their family!
