I think of you every day. The memories of the beach are the best. You taught me how to catch minnows in the Indian trap you made out of branches and string. The look on your face of pure joy and pride was the happiest I ever saw you. I'll never forget laughing with you on that day in the hot sun of James Bay.

I was saddened to hear about Kal's death. We shared an office wall for three years near the end of his time at IOS. We had many long conversations about the science of hydrography, a topic he was very passionate about. I am continuing some of the work he started, so our collaboration will carry on, for a time anyway.

Joan, and family, may I offer my condolences to you and the wide, extended family of Kal's. It was with difficulty that I saw Kal struggle in the past few years, but always was impressed with his positive attitude, never wanting to dwell on his own issues. We spent many hours traveling in our carpool of 5, between Victoria and IOS. There was always lively conversation, but Kal invariably had a sage comment to bring things into perspective. I will miss our talks about coaching soccer, about fixing the many house projects, and always admire his need to finish things right. A good man with a good heart. He will be sorely missed by many of us.
