I served with Randy in Sudan with UNMIS. He always gave solid advice and had a great smile. Sir: "May you have fair winds and following seas".

I went to law school with Randy and Patti and greatly enjoyed his comradeship and his sense of humour. He was the best of friends.

I am so sorry to read if your loss. Randy and I were buddies at CFSAL in '75 and kept tenuous touch over the years. During our last exchange, I'd said that on my next visit to BC I was going to try to link up.

This will happen this summer and I was looking all over in my contact list to find him but he'd disappeared. Now I know why.

He was a large and gentle soul (so was his invisible rabbit whose name I now forget). I'm richer for having known him.

Patti and family

My sincere condolences on your loss. Words cannot express how shocked Laura and I were when we heard. I will always remember Randy fondly especially the great times we spent together. Although I had not seen in him in some time I remember fondly the last dinner we all had together shortly before you left for Prince George. I kook forward to seeing you on the 18th. Know you and the family are in our thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace friend.

We already like the world less, with Randy gone from it.
It was with profound sadness and shock that we learned of Randy's recent passing. Val and I offer our sincere condolences to Patti, Spencer, Joel and Casey on Randy's all too untimely passing. We first met Randy, Patti and the boys when I was posted to Esquimalt as a young Legal Branch captain in the early 90s. Randy was a proud Reserve legal officer and a well known and respected lawyer in Victoria. We all became instant friends and battle buddies for life. I had the great pleasure to serve with Randy until he retired from the military. We worked closely together on many issues and during deployments. He taught me so much about being a practical and pragmatic legal advisor. Moreover, he taught me much about being a caring person and a trusted friend. Randy always found the energy to be joyful and positive. He always had great anecdotes from his military life, his civilian life and from his family. They were often hilarious and peppered with his massive smile and booming laughter. Yet such stories also provided insightful lessons on being a compassionate and caring person. I also was glad to discover that Randy was, like me, a big Star Trek fan. He and I spent countless hours playing Risk and laughing until our stomachs hurt about Capt James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock. Randy was a true renaissance man. He could do it all and always with a smile. Val and I got to know Randy, Patti and the boys very well. We will always remember and treasure our time together. It is so very hard to believe he is gone. I thank Randy, Patti and the boys for their many years service and sacrifice for Canada. While Randy's passing has left a big hole in our hearts and, indeed in the world, we know his indomitable spirit lives on and brightens our lives. I know Randy would want us all to "live long and prosper". Fiat Justitia (let justice prevail) my dear friend.

With Randy's larger than life presence, positive attitude and fitness level somehow we never allowed ourselves to believe that this was a possible outcome. With that, we missed saying goodbye and telling Randy what an amazing person he was to be around, how much he meant to us and how the world was better with him in it. Patti and boys, our hearts go out to you.

It was a pleasure to serve with and enjoy the friendship of Randy in the 8th Canadian Hussars in Petawawa and Cyprus. He was an officer and gentleman in the finest sense of the term and contributed greatly to the efficiency and morale of the Regiment.

I worked with Randy many years ago in Victoria and I can still hear him laugh. He had a huge heart and he was a fabulous co-worker. Rest in peace friend.

Very sorry to hear this about such a lively person. I have known him on and off since 1976 when he was assigned as Quartermaster to the 8th Cdn Hussars in Petawawa. Many decades later, he was the senior legal counsel for Joint Task Force Games where I served as well. He was superb and quite frankly despite that kind of (rather serious) work, was the type of person who could light up a room -- just by being there. He will be sorely missed by so many who knew him.

Thanks for passing this on.
I don't know what to say. Randy was so full of life and humor and of course dedication to his profession.
I had no idea he was ill.
He has left us way too early
