I first met Tom when I replaced him as DIRD in NDHQ in early 1991 shortly before he headed off to Washington. While Tom went to HQ from DREA in Halifax, I went east from DREP in Victoria. At work Tom became a truly dedicated and willing mentor to me ensuring his vast experience and sound knowledge of policies and politics would bring a fresh scientist up to speed so that Canada could continue to reap the enormous leaverage from collaborative defence R&D with its many international allies. At play, Tom and Terry had Donna and I for numerous delightful and memorable dinner soirées.

Following Tom's tour in the Washington Embassy, he had the unenviable task of drafting the downsizing and partial closure plans for DREP. I had the equally unenviable task of returning to the Pacific lab in 1995 to oversee the upheavals in the lives of most of the staff which left a reduced contingent in support of the operational needs of the Pacific Fleet. This local support R&D group has also just ended in 2017. Later I followed Tom's earlier path to the Councillor position in the High Commission in London where his sage advice would have been more than welcome on many an occasion .

Tom's contributions to the lives of all who crossed his path will remain a moveable feast which will be treasured for years to come.

Our sincere heartfelt condolences to his family and many friends.

It was with great sadness that we learned of Tom's death.
We send the family our condolences.

In this modern world of sham and superficiality, true greatness is rare. Thomas Drummond was a great man. He possessed a brilliant intellect, which the reader of his obituary, in its summary of Tom's illustrious scientific career, only glimpses. As a military officer and throughout his life, Tom was distinguished as a man of irreproachable integrity; he lived by the code of a true "chevalier" from a bygone age. In addition to his strength of character, upon which so many relied, Tom inspired others with his galvanic creative energy, and he could always be counted on for his good cheer, camaraderie, and optimism. His humour, not infrequently sardonic, could provoke uproarious laughter. Putting others before himself, Tom lived every day of his life with compassion; for friends, neighbours, and even stray cats. His beautiful and elegant wife Terry was the love of his life, and they enjoyed a storybook romance that ended only in death. We hope it continues now into eternity. It was a coveted honour for many of us to have known such a true gentleman and to have considered him our friend. We will all miss Tom so very much.
