Walter was one of the first people I met when I moved to Alberta in 1967 and he quickly became one of my favourite people. He seemed like a mentor who wanted to make sure I learned the ways of Canada as well as of a huge extended family and that I benefited from all the opportunities that came my way while adjusting to a Canadian's winter life in the coziness of his mom's home. While our paths have not crossed much over the past few years, those memories are ones I cherish. Bob and I send our affection to Joan and the whole family.

To Leslie and family. I am sorry for your loss. Now is the time to cherish and reflect upon on your special moments together. I will always remember your Dad as he beautifully played his bagpipes at many Remembrance Day assemblies at the schools we taught in together. Best wishes!

I was so sad to hear of Walter Muir's death. He was a gentle man & a scholar & he was interested in social justice. In my sometimes difficult work involving campus harassment, he was one of the few faculty men we could count on to really care about equity and fair treatment. Thank you Walter, you made UVic a more humane place of work & learning....... and I should add, fun. Play on.

Both Mimi and I are deeply saddened to hear of Walter's passing. Walter was a true scholar and fine gentleman, one who was both respectful of and respected by his colleagues, friends, students, and, especially, his family. I had the distinct pleasure of working with Walter on several projects. One memory in particular is very special. Joan dropped Walter off at our house, and he, Mimi, and I traveled to Hong Kong, Jakarta, and Bali to work on a project. We actually did some work, and we also had tons of fun. I also recall that, when we got back to Victoria, Joan picked us up and declared vehemently that next time, "I'm coming along"! I wish! Our warm thoughts to all the Muirs.

There are many people in Canada whose lives have been enriched by Walter's wisdom, guidance and friendship. His has been a life lived to benefit others. He was a fine professor and colleague, a clever man. I enjoyed working with him. It has been a pleasure to know him. Please accept my condolences.
