Evelyn Griffis Sayre, October 15, 1930 - April 5, 2021, age 90, died at Pruitt Health in Fleming Island under Hospice Care. Daughter of Cora Carrin and Dennis Griffis, Evelyn grew up in Raiford FL and moved to Jacksonville FL after high school graduation. She had an interesting childhood as a fiery redhead and enjoyed instigating and causing havoc with her siblings, Dennis, Ora, Claude, Faye, and Ophelia-all predeceasing her. She married the love of her life, Edward Sayre, in 1953. Edward was in the US Navy and then US Air Force, serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam and they moved all over – Berlin, Germany; Michigan, Alaska, Texas, Louisiana – to name a few! Her one true love, Edward, passed away in 1985.
Evelyn and Edward had five children: Edward, Jr. (Debbie), twins Dennis (Kara) and Doug (Marie), Richard (MJ) and Donna (Mike). She has 12 grandchildren with Sam and Kolton predeceasing her, and has 2 great-grand children with 2 on the way. She also had the love and support of her niece Mary Moses and great-niece Amy Hales in addition to many, many more.
Evelyn was the matriarch of the family and was admired and looked up to by all. She retired from the Internal Revenue Service and enjoyed a long retirement, going on cruises, trips to see her children, grand-children and great-grand children (with stops at casinos when she could). She loved being with family and they in turn enjoyed every moment with her.
Funeral arrangements are being finalized through Archer-Milton Funeral Home, 55 N Lake Ave. Lake Butler, FL 32054

Evelyn was one of the finest people I have ever known. She mentored me at IRS and then retired. Now, I miss her again.

Eveylyn was a wonderful and kind person. She was a mentor at work and always willing to share her life experiences. She always kept it real and put things in perspective. I missed her after she retired. My condolences and prayers for her family.

Evelyn was a mentor to me in the early days of my career at the Internal Revenue Service. We were kindred spirits as I was also a military spouse. She could always offer great advice about balancing family and work life. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
