ROBERT G. GRIMES
Robert G. Grimes, of Kennewick, WA, passed away on February 11, 2017 in Richland WA. Robert was born at home in Chula Missouri, May 3,1927 to Denard and Lida Estelle Grimes, Robert was the oldest of six children and the only son. March 1945 at the age of 17, Robert joined the Navy, he served on the APA 44 Fremont troop transport and was honorably discharged in December 1951. While on leave in 1950, he met Dollyann Wilson the best friend of his sister Shirley. They were married August 8, 1952 in Prosser Washington. Christmas day, 1953 their first child Greg was born. Robert began working on the Hanford site not long after his discharge from the Navy, he worked as a Teamster and warehouseman. When the work took a down turn the family moved back to Missouri and Robert went to work as a farm hand for his favorite Uncle, Clarence Grimes. December 25, 1955 Mike was born to Robert and Dollyann and 2 years later October 25, 1957, Cheryl the last child and only girl was born into the family. In 1960 Robert and Dollyann moved back to Washington State to raise their family in Sunnyside. Robert worked as a Teamster for Vail Paving Company until 1962 when he enrolled in the welding program at Columbia Basin College. Upon completion in 1964 he went to work in the Seattle shipyards with the Boilermakers on graveyard. He had his heart set on joining the Ironworkers Union and every morning after work he would go to the Ironworkers Local 86 Hall to check on getting a job. He was sent out as a permit welder to Wells Dam and in 1966 joined Ironworkers Local 86. Robert worked on Chief Joe and Little Goose Dams on the Columbia and Snake Rivers. In 1971 while working on the 3rd powerhouse of Grand Coulee, Robert transferred his ticket into Ironworkers Local 14 Spokane Wa. Where he remained a member in good standing. Robert worked for various contractors in the northwest to include FFTF, WNP #2, and Lampson Crane & Rigging until he was forced to take a disability retirement at the age of 57. Robert and Dollyann moved to Pasco in 1984 to be near their children and grandchildren. Robert loved fishing and fished all year to be able to feed the entire family and extended family at the "Annual Fish Fry", we always had more than enough. Robert's favorite aunt, Virginia Grimes embroidered a poem and had it framed for him it hangs in his home. I pray that I may Live to fish Until my dying day And when it comes To my last cast I then most humbly pray When in my Lords Great landing net And peacefully asleep That in his mercy I be judged Big enough to keep Robert was predeceased in death by his parents, sisters Lois McGinity and Peggy Whitmire. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, son Gregory (Cindy), son Michael (Jolene) and daughter Cheryl Sanders (Kevin). Grandchildren Lacey Howard (Mike), Rylan Grimes (Carrie), Kylie Grimes, Derek Sanders, Tessa Sanders and great grandchildren Camden Howard and Layla Howard. Robert has 3 surviving sisters, Shirley Cook, Sylvia Grimes-Glass and Carol Sue. Graveside service will be held on Saturday February 18, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Columbia Memorial Gardens at 224 S. 24th Ave Pasco, WA. Viewing will be between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Kennewick Senior Center @ 2:00 p.m. at 500 S. Auburn ST Kennewick, WA.
