I was impressed with Mr. Allen after our first rehearsal in Jackson hole, Wyoming. He was a director who relaxed you, then seemed able to lift everyone's performance at one time. He seemed simple, yet he brought out my ability to connect my spirit and the songs to a deeper level. I'm sure he did this for many, and I thank him and Herb, enjoy your rest.

There seem to be no more words to say about or for Herb but I'll try. We all loved him. We were all so blessed to be part of the UWP family and have a chance to share in his many, many talents. All we can do is continue to sing. Every time I lift my voice, I'll remember his encouragement and smile and patience with those of us who struggled to learn a part or stay in tune. Because it wasn't about the music being perfect (even if that's what we were always seeking) it was the heart and soul and love that we learned to pour into the show. Herb showed us that, taught us that, with every note he conducted, every arrangement he configured, every lyric he created or collaborated on. My thoughts and prayers will be unending to all who so keenly feel this loss.

I am proud to call Herb my friend and I will miss him. The memory that stands out most in my mind is Up With People's first ever tour of Italy. Herb always 'brought down the house' with the xylophone. He loved the Italian people and they loved him. I love you too, Herb!

Herbie became my hero at my piano recital at his parents house. I played my tune with two fingers and he sat at the other piano in the living room and made it sound really, really good. I was about 8 years old.

As I watch this I can't help remember how kind Herb was about my utter lack of musical talent. Our thoughts are with his family and our UWP family.

Herb was a genius at bringing out the best in people at all times and in all circumstances. It was one of my greatest pleasures in life to work with him through the sound crew of the stage crew and also in encouraging our travelling high school students to attain the highest accolades in their early careers. An inspiration and template for dedication and commitment to the highest ideals.

Herb was a wonderful man. Full of laughter, talent and kindness. The world is a better place because he was here. He is missed. Herb and Jane provided a home away from home to me when I was a teenager. He was lovely to me and treated me as if I was one of his daughters. I am so grateful to have known him. His sweet spirit has gone home to heaven but the light he brought into the world still shines.

One more Angel in Heaven, one less here on Earth. Herbie has returned home.

Herb Allen helped forge a disorderly group of otherwise passionate young people into an amazing musical experience of Up with People over 50 years ago, and how lucky I was to have been one of them. He has inspired tens of thousands over the years since, changing lives and spawning countless musical careers.

Herb combined vision, genius, authenticity, generosity, humility, unbridled humor and joy in ways that are incomprehensible to the rest of us, but we basked in his gifts every moment we were with him. With a heart that would fill a body twice his size and unconditional regard for all he met, "thoroughly genuine" is hardly descriptive enough for this remarkable man. There was not an unloving bone in his body, but he could punish a pun like few others. He brought lightness into every room he entered, and no one could bring focus to a group of 100 performers as quickly as Herb. The consummate professional, he performed for millions, kings and popes, nor lost the common touch.

His devotion to Jane, his soul-mate of 60 years, was a lesson in commitment for the ages, through thick and thin, and there was plenty of both. Love was always an active verb. I don't know where to stop in reflecting on how profoundly his life touched all of ours, and how deeply we have loved him.

I have not personally been so moved by the passing of anyone other than my own parents, and have found it so hard to even put words on paper. Of all the gifts he gave me, a final one was the opportunity to say the last goodbye in person. Southern boys don't do that well, as we were bred to be tentative and optimistic. But his authenticity deserved nothing less from me, and how desperately we need that Herb Allen quality of Authenticity in our world today. For a man who had countless reasons for an expansive ego, he demonstrated only the opposite. Our national leadership needs that book, not just a page from it.

If there is one thing, among many, to take forward from our rich experience of Herb Allen, is to live each day with his spirit of authenticity and unconditional regard for every being we encounter, whether in agreement with them or not. It's our best hope to continue changing the world the way he did.

So now on to the Celebration of this life-so-well-lived, while attending to those indelible qualities in our own lives and trying our best to remember some of Herb Allen's classic puns. It's what he would likely appreciate much more that the adulation that we will give him anyway. God's speed gentle spirit!

What can I say about Herbie Allen that hasn't been said by the thousands of people around the world that loved and adored this man. He was a gentle giant amongst us all. Always with a big smile on his face and a kind word. He will be missed by many but heaven has gained a wonderful musican to lead the band, and choir. He taught us well. Peace be with you Herbie. Thoughts and prayers to all the family and friends of Herb Allen. God's speed.

To Herbie, Jane and family(I have been out of town and have just found out about Herbie!) have always been a great inspiration to me, not just musically, but most importantly, through your infectious love of life. I had the honor of working with you in 1974-1978 and when I left UWP, I always tried to keep your spirit of love and generosity in my heart! (It was a way to keep a little bit of 'YOU' a part of my life forever!)

Now it's the angels turn to enjoy daily concerts that will inspire them to fly higher then ever. And for those of us 'earthbound' we'll continue to seek out opportunities to "give back" in ways that might make a little difference and hopefully make you proud!

To Jane and your beautiful children and grandchildren, you are in my heart and prayers. I know you feel a tremendous hole in your heart! Please remember all the love that surrounds you and know we'll always be there for you anytime you feel like talking, yelling, or even laughing at any of the many stories that will warm your heart for sure!

Jane, please take good care of yourself! You have a circle of love around YOU and all your children. We'll always be here for you.!

Sending all my love,

Kathy Diamond
