Lifetime Sonora resident Edward "Uncle Ed" Nelson Lane passed away on April 17 at the age of 82.
Ed was a fabulous artist. He worked with oils, he did portraits and landscapes and built true-to-life sets for several churches. He was a loving uncle to his nieces and nephews and will always be remembered for his love of the Jewish people.
Ed is survived by his siblings, Penny Carlton and Rebecca Hillier. He was preceded in death by both parents, and brothers William and Thomas.

Ed Lane was a cherished friend to many in the vast world of James Dean fans. He was as good a person as he was an artist-- and he was a fantastic artist! Ed was one of the finest painters who ever painted James Dean. In addition to his tremendous talent, he was also known for his sweetness and generosity of spirit. Fellow Dean fans will be very sad to hear of his passing. The world has lost a talented artist, and more importantly, a wonderful person.

Uncle “Eddie” was my great-uncle and one of my best friends. I feel as though I hadn’t gotten enough time with him in this life. But the things I learned from him will always be with me. He was a true artist and his body of work still astonishes me. I knew growing up that my goal was to be as good as he was. He wasn’t famous, but I looked up to him and he initiated, influenced and guided a lot of my own art, and tastes. He gave us so many good memories. And he was a master photographer, and indefatigable videographer. Years of our lives are on video and preserved for years to come. I am so thankful to have been able to enjoy his gifts, and to have had him in my life. It still hurts to lose him. He was so special to me. He was my first art teacher and my idol.
As a side note: I have been compiling for the past couple years his works into a single volume. I will be putting his works in print in a very respectful and artful way I think he would have loved to see. If there are any family or friends in Tuolumne County who would be willing to sell, or loan or arrange for me to photograph an Ed Lane work that you have, I would greatly appreciate it! Its my goal to compile his work and present it in Tuolumne County, to honor him as the great artist he was. I want him to have the legacy he deserved for his talent and the beautiful human being he was. Contact me on Facebook.

Eddie was a nice friend when I knew him as a teenager and he visited Fran and Tom in Early Intake. Eddie had lots of style in the clothes he wore. I remember he painted a picture of Tom and Fran’s house. RIP dear Eddie
