Mary Thawley Obituary

Mrs. Mary Agnes Glennon Thawley, age 99 of Point Pleasant, NJ, died Wednesday November 7 at home surrounded by her loving family. Mary Agnes was the daughter of the late Thomas J and Mary Ellen (McCaffery) Glennon of Manchester, NH, who both immigrated from Ireland and settled in Manchester at the turn of the 20th Century. Born in Manchester, New Hampshire in 1919, Mary Agnes graduated from The Donald School in 1933 and Manchester Central High School in 1937. After graduation she worked as a secretary in several businesses in Manchester. During World War II she met her future husband George Thawley at a dance held at the Manchester armory. They continued a long correspondence through the mail as George was stationed in North Africa and Italy during the war. He proposed marriage to her through the mail, and on January 18th, 1947 they were married at Saint Anne RC Church in Manchester New Hampshire. Her marriage was the first marriage between a Roman Catholic and non-Catholic to be held inside historic Saint Anne's Church. Mary Agnes Glennon Thawley was a parishioner of St. Anne's Church and received, Baptism, 1st communion, confirmation, and the sacrament of marriage in her beloved St. Anne's

Mrs. Thawley and her husband subsequently lived in Boston, MA after marriage and in 1965 she and her husband and five children moved to Point Pleasant, NJ. Her husband George Thawley was an educator and from 1965 to 1979 was principal of Point Pleasant Beach High School. He retired as Superintendent in 1983.

Mary Agnes graduated from Trenton State College in 1973 with a BA in Speech Pathology and Audiology. Mrs. Thawley was a speech and pathology teacher in several school districts in New Jersey. She retired from teaching in 2002

Mary Agnes enjoyed summer days on various boardwalks along the Jersey Shore, and summer vacations in her beloved Manchester, NH and Hampton Beach, NH. Most of all she enjoyed holiday celebrations with family in Point Pleasant, NJ. She had a great sense of humor, loved to laugh and loved her family dearly. She had a deep abiding faith and encouraged her children to be faithful to the Church, its sacraments and Gospel values. Catholic education has played an important role in her life and the life of her family.

She is predeceased by her parents and numerous aunts and uncles, her husband George C., her brother Thomas Glennon, and her daughter Mary Nancy. She is survived by her Son George J. ( and wife Marianne Holton) of Coupeville, WA, daughter Barbara (and husband Andy Bagnall) of Kensington, MD, son Brian (and wife Elissa Weil ) of New York, NY, son John of Point Pleasant, NJ., her grandchildren Kristin, Jessica, David, Maya and Malacki and many cousins in New Hampshire and Ireland.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday November 10 at 10 am at Saint Peter Church, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ.

A Prayer Service will be held on Tuesday November 13 at 10 am in the Chapel of Saint Joseph Cemetery, 448 Donald Street, Bedford, NH. Interment will follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery. The McHugh Funeral Home has been entrusted by the family with her care. Condolences may be offered at www.mchughfuneralhome.com.
