William W. White Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Marine Lance Cpl. William W. White was scheduled to be discharged in February, but that was delayed because of the war. Speakers at his funeral said he wanted to go with his unit to the Middle East out of concern for a fellow Marine who was nervous about going. "That''s the kind of guy he was. ... He always thought about someone else first," said his widow, Mychaele. White, 24, of Brooklyn, N.Y., died March 29 when his military vehicle rolled into a canal. White had wanted to move back to Brooklyn and join the Fire Department or pursue a career in law enforcement, relatives said. "He was a fine gentleman, he set a good example, he led by example, so we have a lot to thank God for," said James Barnett Sefus, who was a spiritual mentor to White, as well as his martial arts instructor.

I was proud to have served with LCpl White during my time in Parris Island over 17 years ago. I wish I could say I knew him better, but I can never forget the calm confidence in the face of the trials he and my other brothers faced in Marine boot camp. God bless his friends, comrades and family. Semper Fidelis.

We would like to express our deepest condolences and also to let the White Family know that we recently sent a donation to the Wounded Warriors in the name of William W. I am so sorry for your loss, but very proud of your son's dedication to his friends, the Marines and our country. It certainly sounds as if he was yet another fine Marine and a great friend. My wife and I are new to the Marine family as my son has just completed boot camp in Jan and is currently in Camp Lejeune for more training. We are so proud of him - and of ALL Marines (and the other branches of service as well). May his (and all others who have made the ultimate sacrifice) memory live on through the Marine Corp. legacy.

Dear Parents of LCpl. White,

When I see their faces, my heart is saddened. Their youth, all the promise that would, could have been. I am struck by the look of resolve on William's face. It is one of a young man coming into his own. One of courage clearly, but of equal importance, one of kindness. His eyes are kind and gentle. He was a gentle soul, caught in a set of circumstances that no one should be caught in--especially young men and women.

I am eternally grateful to your son''s willingness to be a Marine, but more importantly to become a kind, gentle and respectful man. May his memory be a blessing, always.

To the family and friends of William: I honor the memory of your son as one of America's true heroes. May we all have a friend in our lives who would be so willing to put themselves in harms way to calm our nerves. This is truelly a selfless act of love from one of God's children and shows he must have had God's strength behind him. May you all have that same strength and love in your lives. I know it has been awhile for you all to adjust but I just wanted you to know that people still care and honor the fallen of America's most brave. I am the proud mom of 2 Marines (son and son-in-law) and I know the character, strength, patriotism, brotherhood, loyalty and quiet heroism of these fine children of ours that choose to enlist and choose to go to war. Our Freedom is not free and only those who fight and their families know the true cost of our freedom. Your son will be forever honored in the hearts of America.

In time, there will come a day when the tears of sorrow will softly flow into sighs of remembrance. Your heart will begin to heal itself.

Grieving will be interrupted by episodes of joy; and you will hear the whisper of hope.

There will come a day when you will welcome the pangs of remembrance as a sun shower of the soul; a turning of the tide; the promise of peace.

There will come a day when you will risk loving, go on believing,

and treasure the remembering.
