Ruben Robledo Herrera

Oxnard - Ruben Robledo Herrera died peacefully, surrounded by family, on December 25, 2020 after a brief illness. He was 71 years old. The youngest of three children, Ruben was born on February 21, 1949 in Oxnard, CA to Jesus and Margaret Herrera. Ruben graduated from Oxnard High School and Ventura College.

Ruben was proud of his roots, having grown up in the Colonia neighborhood, and he dedicated his entire career to support the children of this County. Employed by the Oxnard Boys and Girls Club for 35 years, Ruben's quick wit and quiet humor gained him the respect of all who walked through those doors. With a Pepsi in hand, Ruben could be found coaching, reffing, making his infamous signs, decorating the club for whatever holiday it was, taking photos, and helping a child or parent. His ability to create a refuge for children and a welcoming environment for their parents, resonates still within the community through the innumerable friendships that were created on his watch. People walked in as strangers and left as friends and family.

Ruben also worked for the County of Ventura for about 14 years, working at Edward J Almanza Gymnasium and at Child Protective Services, where he continued to build a legacy of care and compassion. Ruben's impact on the lives of all those who knew him is indescribable and he will be sorely missed.

Ruben was a humble, loving, and nurturing man who embraced his family, especially his grandchildren, with unconditional love. Ruben is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 45 years, Stella Herrera; brother Robert (Basilia) Herrera; daughter Mitzie; sons Joe (Christine) and Angel (Adriana) Soto. He also leaves behind his grandchildren; Joseph, Samira, Jocelin, Savanah, Angel, Ashley, Heather, Karyssa, Kayla, Savanah H, Niquee, Zach, Shelton, and 14 great-grandchildren. Ruben is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews and dear friends. Ruben is predeceased by his parents and his brother Henry Herrera.

Ruben was always a relevant, stand up person - for his family his friends & his associates and in his community involvement.
His positive attitude on the job at the original Oxnard Boys Club was always that. Firm but smooth control . Ruben had it going on in maintaining an activity-laden atmosphere for the kids and young adults
With Ruben you always received honesty and fairness. Ruben loved his job, loved the kids

I would first like to offer my most deepest and sincerest condolences to the family, friends and all those who knew Ruben. I have had the blessing of knowing Ruben for the greater portion of my life. I met Ruben for the very first time at the Boys & Girls Club on 7th. Street when I was about 14yrs old, and in a very short period of time he went on to become someone that I admired, respected, looked up too, a mentor and one of my closest friends. Ruben taught me a new appreciation for a game I already loved, basketball and it’s because of him that I have remained so close to the game and the basketball community in Oxnard, and that is something that I will always be grateful for. But more than just basketball Ruben mentored me through most of my young adulthood. He was always there to offer advise and help me when I needed it, and not to mention a great listener. He even stood as my witness when I married my wife. It is through this relationship with Ruben that I’ve had the privilege of knowing Stella, Joe, Christine, Angel, Joseph, Jocelyn, extended families and many of you. I feel fortunate and very blessed to know that I had the opportunity to have had Ruben in my life all these years. I am so sorry for the loss you are all going through. I will miss Ruben and I know that when basketball resumes and I walk into a gym whether it’s to officiate a game or watch my son play, I will always be remembering and thinking of him and all the great memories we shared. Until we meet again, my dear friend...

Sending my condolences to Ruben’s family. I will always remember him walking around the 7th Street Boys and Girls Club. I will remember him coaching basketball, running the Game Room, and driving the BGC Van all around town. He was always coaching and mentoring boys and girls.
Ruben was certainly a pillar of this community. He was always instilling the core values of the BGC in every member that walked through those doors and many were better because of him.
I was on the Colonia Cougar Basketball Team, but I will always remember Ruben’s team as our most fierce competitors because of his excellent coaching skills and knowledge of the sport.
Rest In Peace Ruben! May you enter the gates of heaven and embrace God for you have served your fellow man so greatly and with such love that God will be proud of all you have done.

Ruben, you were a true gift from God. You were so much a part of my childhood when I really needed you to be. I will never forget the trips in the Boys Club Van to the various amusement parks, the parades and the man who was always there for any kid who needed him. You are a true icon of a man for all you shared your life with.Even though I hadn't seen you too much over the years, you were always a bright light in my life... I was honored to be at your 70th Birthday celebration... Rest on Ruben

Ruben there is not enough words in the world that I could say to thank you for all that you did in my life. When I had to face a deep hurt that I experienced as a little girl you were there to support me. When I was nominated for Youth of the Year and I wanted to refuse it because I was going to be a teen mom you told me I deserved it more than anyone. You never judged or walked away. Thank you for being such a mentor in my life. You saved my life Ruben and I will never ever forget you. RIP I Love You.

Dear Stella, Bobby and Family,
We are saddened to hear of Ruben’s passing. Ruben has been a guiding hand of good to our youth in our community.
His presence, unending dedication to providing a positive example to
our youth will be never forgotten.
I worked for Ruben, as a sports official, sometimes on a moments notice. Later on worked to provide funding for the Almanza Gym.
Ruben, always positive, always with a smile.
