I met Harold Herman through his partner in the early 1980s. He was a wonderful individual, with a lively personality and a warm sense of humor. I will remember him and his partner (Harold Mays) fondly and will miss them a lot.

I've waited patiently for my annual holiday card to come from Dr. Herman. He always asks what I'm reading (extra points for anything related to Arthurian Legend). He asks how my son is doing. I always write back with a quick update on my son and a brief glimpse in to my own life. We've been exchanging those annual cards for 28 years. Every time I think of never getting another card I want to cry. I will think of him every year until I am no longer here to send holiday cards.

It is hard to think of Dr. Herman's no longer walking this planet. I remember him not so much as my History of the English Language professor or later a colleague but as a friend. He always sided with the lowly graduate students over his fellow professors. I see him still, strolling down the halls of the U of MD with the Baugh Bible tucked under one arm, that shock of platinum hair, and his inimitable cackle preceding him. Loved you, Harold. Always have. Always will.

I am so sorry for the loss of your loved one. Please find peace and comfort in Psalms 119:76.

Harold was, and I am sure in his risen life still is, a bright spirit and a wonderful neighbor. I cherish the story he shared with me of ushering at the old St Thomas Church wearing morning coat and gloves. All the best to Hal.

I remember Harold as a wonderful colleague and mentor when I was a grad student at UMD. He had a great sense of humor. My condolences to Hal and to Harold's family.

Uncle Harold you are remembered with Love and will live in our hearts forever.

My family and I are deeply depressed by Uncle Harold's passing. My brother and I visited him several times and I called him quite often. We loved him very much and he is remembered with Love and will live in our hearts forever.

Sally and I are saddened at Uncle Harold's passing. I always enjoyed my visit each year and the many wonderful conversations we had. We will miss you. Mike & Sally Herman
