BEHRENS HOWARD CHESNER BEHRENS Washington metropolitan area acclaimed artist HOWARD C. BEHRENS died on April 14, 2014, from Parkinson's disease complications. He was 80 years old. Mr. Behrens is regarded as the premier American palette knife artist of his time, with numerous shows in the United States and around the world. His work is found in museums and private collections worldwide. Howard Chesner Behrens was born on August 20, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois. His family moved to Takoma Park in 1940. As a young man, Howard's artistic and creative talents emerged as he developed an interest in oil painting. He earned a Masters Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Maryland in 1964. Soon after graduate school, Behrens was hired by the U.S. Government Printing Office in Washington, DC, where his father was employed as a printer. For the next seventeen years he worked on a wide variety of publications that the Printing Office designed, illustrated, and printed for various agencies of the federal government. His passion for travel, for trying new techniques, and his endless hours of painting after work helped him to create his own style of painting with a palette knife. Behrens was captivated by the bright swirls of color that he could create by applying thick globs of oil paint onto a canvas using a palette knife. In Howard's words, "Since the late 1970's I used only a palette knife to create my paintings. Looking back, I cannot believe it took me so long to discover its potential." Mr. Behrens first solo exhibition occurred in 1981 with the Wally Findlay Galleries in Palm Beach Florida. This launched his career and was followed by hundreds of one-artist shows in the US and around the world. Through his art, he celebrated the beauty in living by painting some of the most picturesque spots on earth. Behrens considered himself to be more of an expressionist artist than an impressionist. Monet and Cezanne, who were impressionists, influenced his work. However, he wanted to communicate the act of painting to the viewer, which is why he regarded himself as an expressionist. The use of the palette knife enabled Mr. Behrens to add layers of depth, texture, and bright colors, which became his trademark as a successful artist. As opposed to the traditional paint brush, the metal edges of the knife enabled the immediacy of conveying paint to the canvas, and therefore engaged the viewer in the act of painting. Mr. Behrens is survived by his four children: Jesse, Jamie, and Scott Behrens, and Candice Behrens Grow, as well as his three grandchildren, Ella Lynn and Varley Steele Behrens, and Lia Marie Grow. Services are private. Instead of flowers, the family requests that those so inclined would consider making a small donation to the National Parkinson's Foundation, Gift Processing Center, PO Box 5018, Hagerstown, Maryland 21741.

It was my privilege to work with judi & Howard in creating his book, The Best of Behrens. Not only did I find judi one of the most organized and helpful people I've ever met, but it was a joy to live with Howard's superb paintings. They have both enriched my life, and Howard's art is an extraordinary legacy.

Dear Judi and family,
I never had the honor to personally meet Howard but as I read tributes to him I realize how much he was loved as a wonderful human being as well as a phenomenal artist. He had a unique gift to not only SEE the simple beauty in God's works but he could make you FEEL it. What a talented man.
I "met" Judi when I wanted to purchase some artwork for my husband. My business transactions with her quickly grew into a warm and dear friendship that I will always treasure. It is obvious to me why Howard painted "My Beloved" art for all of us to see.
My sincere condolences to Howard's family on your loss. Please take comfort in the fact that this wonderful man was in your life for as long as he was.

Judi,
1. Thank you, we are honored to be asked to participate in your development of Howard's legacy project.
2. Many years ago, as a cruise ship chaplain, Denise and I met a tall, skinny guy submerged in one of the ship's hot tubs. We talked at length about his favorite subject – “Great Globs of Color.” Wow, what a quiet friendly person, and he invited us to the ship's art auction the next day. And who did we find? Howard, the center of attraction, surrounded by admiring onlookers, all in awe as he deftly scooped up and stroked his great globs of bright red, green and yellow onto his still life of brilliant flowers. So here we met Howard Behrens, quiet yet world famous, renowned artist yet humble and friendly with all. Today, with all too rapidly passing years, our homes are adorned in Howard's gifts to humanity – our center piece images – his final creations: “Fire Sky Venice.” Legacies endure, and so with the beauty created by Howard Behrens. As a minister I feel from the eyes of my heart: Howard has pleased our Creator in bearing fruit in every good work, His Spirit upon our spirits; let us all believe, Howard now sees not dimly as we in a mirror - but now fully face to face. (Ephesians 1:18; Colossians 1:10; Hebrews 10:16; Mark 9:24; 1 Corinthians 13:12) We Howard are your legacy, and we thank you for gifting us with color that endures.

Howard was and is a precious gym and a lovely sole and we will live vicariously through his memory & work for ever. He was taken from us before his time by a unforgiving and devastating affliction. Our friend Howard is now painting even a more "heavenly piece" painlessly, in a more heavenly place with another Master. May he rest in peace. Judi, thank you for all the time and energy you both have shared. We will cherish the love and memories forever.

Howard you were much more than a phenomenal artist, a talent that touched so many people but more importantly you were one of the most gracious, caring and refined gentlemen that I ever had the pleasure to know. For so many of us, we regarded you as immortal but unfortunately this was not the case.
You will be greatly missed by many, many people but your spirit and legacy will be with us forever.
Judi, I feel for you and hope in time you find solace and peace.
I will miss you Howard!

Dear Judi & Family,
We were very saddened to hear about Howard's passing. What a beautiful legacy he left the world in his gorgeous works of art. We have fond memories of being with Howard planning the beautiful Monet scene he painted for our dining room and seeing him on our hotel balcony in Capri snapping photos of Judi. We attended the dinner when his gallery in Carmel opened and purchased our lovely original painting of China Basin which hangs over our mantel in our living room. Our scene from Capri greets us in our bedroom daily! And, Judi & Howard were so gracious to host us in their magnificent villa in Potomac.
We send our love and sympathy to Howard's entire family.

Without Howard's art, my poster publishing business would have been sorely lacking in classic beauty. Several of Howard's posters, which I first published in 1992, are STILL IN PRINT. That shows what a true classic looks like, artwork which the entire world loves. I estimate that I sold Howard's posters in at least 20 countries. Rest in peace Howard...your contribution continues on in this world.

My Thoughts and prayers go out to the Behrens family. I knew Howard for over 12 years and had the pleasure and privilege to spend a great deal of time traveling the world with him and his wife Judi. I got to witness him creating some amazing works of art and saw the joy he brought to so many collectors lives. He was genuinely "American" and will go down as a "National Treasure".. I hope the Art Scholars and aficionados give him his due in the months and years to come. I look forward to respective exhibitions of his works so that those who were not familiar with his life's work will also be touched by his talent. Thanks for the memories!

We started collecting art about 15 years ago. The very first painting we purchased was a serigraph on paper by Howard. We now own 10 of his originals and we enjoy them every day. Over those years we got to know Howard and Judi. On a couple of occassions I had the opportunity of donating money to him via a friendly poker game. Good bye Howard.
I used to hang out with Howard when he was about 30 and I was 20 and working in Silver Spring Md. I only lived in the Silver Spring Area for about 1 yr, but got to know Howard and his brother Ron very well.
I think he was still teaching at the U of Md at the time.
I obtained a few of Howard's paintings by trading them for a old reel type tape recorder of mine he wanted. The paintings Howard gave me were never signed. Maybe 40 or more years later I brought the paintings to the Art show in the Javitz Center in NYC . I was hoping to see Howard again and have him sign the (3) paintings I brought to the show. Unfortunately Howard had left for Virginia and I missed him. Judi was nice enough to volunteer to drive the paintings in their van back to Virginia and have Howard sign them.
Shortly thereafter I received the paintings back from Howard all signed.
Over the years I never did get to meet with Howard personally beyond the year I spent in Md. but did have the pleasure of talking to him on the phone a few times over the years.
I recall spending many nights at his parents home in Patomac Park, Md. watching sports with his father and brother Ron. I recall watching Howard and his brother build a sailboat together in the back yard.
I remember commissioning Howard to paint a U.of Md. Football action photo of my brother. That photo stills hangs in my brother's Connecticut apartment.
Howard, many found memories with you.... I will never forget you.

We fell in love with Howard's beautiful paintings on the Princess cruise ships. His works are second to none. At the time, we were early in our art collecting days and an original was beyond our reach. We feel so fortunate to have been invited to Villa Behrens in 2009 and meet Howard in person. What an amazing artist and even a kinder person. What a gentle soul. We came home with several embellished giclees. Just recently, we found ourselves at a new point in our lives and were able to make my dream come true with two Howard Behren's originals on oils, including the one that got away several years ago. We were absolutely thrilled! Our heart breaks that this remarkable talent is no longer with us, but are thankful that his suffering is over and that he is at peace now. Our deepest condolences to Judi, his family, and close friends. He soul will live forever through his art.

Howard,
Although we didn't get the chance to meet in person, I met many of your artistic expressions while representing you through the Princess Fine Arts Programme. I held out hope that eventually I'd get an artist's cruise or Connoisseur cruise where we could meet and I could tell you what a fan I am of your work, some of which I own.
With many artists there are some works you love, and others that make you scratch your head. Not with yours. I can honestly say I never saw or sold a Behrens I didn't like, and that has to speak volumes to your legacy.
A palette-knife Master, with no-one in sight to fill the void you left behind, with a magnificent library of works to show the next generation how it's done.

Howard and I spent 17 years of our lives together.
I visited him many times while he was in Assisted Living and then in Manor Care. We relived so many of our trips and our mutual love of art. I showed him some of my "art" - created on a recent cruise as I tried for the first time to paint. He smiled so beautifully that I tried to paint a scene that we had shared together.
I mourn his passing profoundly but am happy that he is no longer suffering.
I am planning a memorial for him in the DC area for this Fall where he will be honored publicly for the beauty that he brought to the world.
Rest in peace dear Howard. You were greatly loved.
