Hugh and I became instant friends from the moment we met when he first became PLAC's Executive Director. I am sure the "instant friendship" quality of Hugh was experienced by all blessed to know his larger than life persona.

Hugh was so much fun, so energetic, passionate about the law and his friends and family, and so very supportive of us all. He also loved tackling a good challenge, as my tale below will demonstrate.

Years ago, at one of PLAC's many Fall meetings at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Hugh was dining with me, Jonathan Hoffman and others on the first night of the Conference. Hugh, of course, was very supportive of the fact that Jon and I not only are lawyers, but also lifelong performing songwriters. Also present at that conference was another singer-songwriter who hailed from Nashville, Trent LeClaire, who traveled with the AV company that supported PLAC's audio-visual needs at its conferences nationally. Hugh decided at that Wednesday night dinner that it would be fun if Jonathan, Trent and I would provide music for the big PLAC dinner the following night.

Needless to say, Jon, Trent and I were "all in" with Hugh's great idea, but we pointed out the fact that we had no instruments, no PA, "no nothing" needed to perform. Hugh immediately responded" "No problem -- what do you need?" He explained that he was old friends with the General Manager of the Broadmoor (why am I not surprised?!), and that the GM could "make anything happen" in Colorado Springs. I then drafted up a list of "dream" instruments and equipment that would have thrilled any budding rock star and handed it to Hugh. Hugh smiled at my "wish list" as if it were child's play to fulfill. The next night, Jon, Trent and I showed up at the PLAC dinner venue in a mountainside room high above the Broadmoor's main campus, and lo and behold, we were greeted by an array of three brand new top-of-the line guitars, on stands, with bar stools, mics, cables, direct boxes, tuners, and guitar picks for each of us. It was"fantasy camp" for me, Jon and Trent! So, Hugh was a wish granter, a dream fulfiller, and an all around force of nature. The words "Can Do" were burnt into his talented DNA.

Hugh: My Brother, my Friend, my Leader, and my Cheerleader, please know that we all love you, we miss you, and we always will remember you with the biggest of smiles!

As a board member of the Product Liability Advisory Council for several years, I worked closely with Hugh. He was well spoken, extremely dedicated and extraordinarily organized - with a dash of good humor. It was a joy to work with him.

Hugh was a great leader at PLAC. He was creative, energetic, a terrific raconteur, and a delight to be with. Most of all, he was a great friend. My entire family will miss him greatly, but we can always appreciate the fact that we were privileged that he was our friend.

Hugh was my dear friend and mentor from the moment he joined PLAC in 1993. He was a champion of leadership opportunities for women, a man who verily "walked the talk." He was funny and fierce and larger than life, and I will miss him more than words can express.
