NELLIE JACKSON Obituary

JACKSON NELLIE NETTLES JACKSON Nellie Nettles Jackson, 93, died of congestive heart failure on August 3, 20l8 at the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Virginia. She was born in Century, Florida on May 19, 1925, the daughter of Pinkney Straughn Jackson and Martha Nettles Jackson. She grew up in Peterman, Alabama and attended Monroeville Elementary and Monroe County High school from which she graduated in 1943. Nell was Valedictorian of her class and a leader in all student activities. In l947 she received her BA degree in Spanish from The College of William and Mary . She pledged Delta Delta Delta sorority there and later was inducted into the Tri-Delta Golden Circle in recognition of 50 years of active affiliation with Tri-Delta alumnae chapters in Florida, New York City, Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia. She was recently honored as a 70 year member of the DAR and represented her Alabama Lt. Josiah Wilcox chapter as a delegate to the annual Continental Congress for many years. After graduation from college, Nell was recruited by the U.S. Department of State and assigned to the embassy in Madrid, Spain, where she served for three years. Returning to the United States, she pursued her career interest in Education and was employed by Duke University, the Ford Foundation, Peabody-Vanderbilt, Samford University, Columbia University Teachers College and the Office of Education in Washington D.C. While at Peabody she earned an MA degree. Her life was marked by intense interest in her faith, education and family. She was concerned with the world around her and with passing on the history of the time she lived and its lessons to family and friends. She is survived by her sister, Jo Ann Harris (George), nieces Barbara (Scott) of Washington, DC, Elizabeth Nell of Seattle, WA, grand-nephew Colin (Calynn), and grandniece Margot. A beloved nephew, George Sellers pre-deceased her. She is mourned and remembered with love and appreciation by many extended family members, godchildren and friends. A Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance was held at the Philadelphia Baptist Church in Tunnel Springs, AL, followed by interment in the Church Cemetery on August 18, 20l8.A beloved nephew, George Sellers pre-deceased her. She is mourned and remembered with love and appreciation by many extended family members, godchildren and friends.
