I fondly remember hours talking with Paul about engines, Alfas, Joy Division, and of course bicycles; often over double jumbo, sausage, chips and beans in the pub down from Heathfield. One time, he had found a 1960s Carlton World Champion track frame and forks in 531 that was hanging in his garage I spotted. He hadn't done anything with it, so sold it to me and I raced and have ridden it ever since. Always with time and so generous and would do anything for you.

Paul was a very capable automotive engineer, starting his professional career in the Engine Research Group at Ford Motor Company, before progressing to Mazda and then Ricardo Engineers at Shoreham-by-Sea. Paul had achieved a First Class Honours degree at Bath University (I think) and gained a prestigous best student award from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Cycling and fixing Alfa Romeo cars were Paul's passion which he pursued vigorously until his serious road accident. Although Paul recovered, regained his natural enthusiasm for life, and tried more physical routine employment, he gradually retired and joined social day groups.
I remember Paul as the weekend cyclist, camping on the Southdowns at the weekends and then sorting engine research and development problems from Monday to Friday. Paul and I maintained contact until five years ago when sadly and frustratingly I was unable to trace him as I was not a family member and was unable to contact his family.
