We met Derek as pay clerks in the Territorial Army some 30 years ago. Derek was our boss and became a great friend (and mentor to me, Mandy). We used to have a great laugh and had some amazing experiences, leaving us with fabulous memories. Derek was our "posh friend", we were an usual set of friends from very different walks of life that formed a strong friendship that saw our families grow and expand. Marriages, births, graduations, grandchildren. We shared a lot and are extremely proud and privileged to have had Derek in our lives. Rest in peace. X

From Brigadier (rtd) His Honour Philip Norris OBE:
As a 78-year-old reader of The Times at my home in Kent, I saw the name, sadly, of Derek Searby in the death notices today, and it sparked the memory that some 55 years ago, in the mid-1960s, he and I were both budding young solicitors in Wakefield. I then left Yorkshire, and Wakefield chums, for pastures new - and only now, all these years later, do I see the name of Derek Searby again, in a place, sadly, I would not have wished. My condolences to his wife and family.
