I never had the pleasure to visit Noel in Ireland. I only interacted with him through our mutual research interests at conferences and meetings abroad. Like many of the tributes I have read today, I remember Noel as a good tempered listener of superior intelligence and a friendly, engaging personality. I seldom remember seeing him alone; always sharing a coffee or a meal with some friend or colleague. He is missed today around the world and will be for many years to come.

As friends, relations-in-laws, and fellow graduate students, we are very sad to hear of Noel's passing. Although we didn't know it at the time, we were graduate students together at Brown University in PhD programs. Years later through McHale family connections, my husband Josef and I really enjoyed getting to meet Noel and Thérèse McHale ( a distant cousin) when they put us up in their home. They were wonderful hosts and we really enjoyed time with them and the daughters. They wined and dined us very well, with home-cooked double desserts (including a special Pavlova!) and great conversation! Noel showed us a little of Limerick University when I had a conference on campus a few years ago. Our son Tristan connected well with the extended family and also enjoyed being with Noel and Thérèse for hikes. Tristan and his girlfriend were delighted to accidentally meet Noel on the way up Croagh Patrick in last fall when Noel was hiking with his brother. He was a super nice person and and a fiercely dedicated professional scholar and teacher. He was also very good to Bernie McHale. We are very sorry for his loss! - Susan and Josef Hurley-Glowa (and Tristan Glowa).
