Agnes (Aggie) Sousa Crocco, age 97, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, November 20, leaving behind a legacy defined by immeasurable love, unwavering compassion, and a lifetime spent caring for others. Agnes was a woman whose heart knew no bounds. She nurtured, comforted, and cared for every person who crossed her path. She had an extraordinary gift for making people feel seen, welcomed, and cherished — a gift she shared generously throughout her long and beautiful life.
Born in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1928 and eventually a resident of New York, Connecticut, and Florida, Agnes married the love of her life, Benjamin "Ben" Crocco, in 1946. Their marriage, which spanned more than six decades until his passing in 2011, was built on devotion, humor, patience, and the deep friendship she often described as the true foundation of lasting love. Together they raised four children and built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and love that made every visitor feel like family.
Alongside her devotion to her family, Agnes found deep purpose and joy in her longtime work as a beautician. She cherished the connections she made behind the chair, offering not only her skill but her listening ear, her kindness, and her ever-present warmth. Even into her 90s, she continued doing hair for friends in her Florida community, turning each appointment into a moment of care, conversation, and companionship.
A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Agnes lived for her family. Nothing brought her more joy than receiving photos of her great-grandchildren or hearing about the accomplishments and milestones her children and grandchildren were achieving. She celebrated every step, every success, every new chapter with unmatched pride and delight.
Agnes was the last surviving of twelve siblings — a testament to her strength, resilience, and the extraordinary life she lived. She was a natural nurturer, someone whose instinct was always to feed, soothe, and support the people she loved. Through her actions, she taught compassion and patience. Through her words, she taught her family to know their worth, to choose those around them with care, and to build lives grounded in love and friendship.
Her presence was gentle but powerful. She listened deeply, sympathized freely, and carried a quiet wisdom that steadied everyone around her. She fixed what she could, held space and prayed for what she couldn't, and left those who knew her feeling perpetually loved.
Agnes is survived by her four children: Diana Crocco, Debbie Renner (Donnie), Eddie Crocco (Cathy), Cynthia Pitkat (and her late husband Robert). She is also survived by her grandchildren: Christopher Crocco (Molly), Claudia Flegar (Dylan), Andrew Crocco (Kate), Jeffrey Maloney, Daniel Crocco (Kim Glatz), Jaclyn Renner (Ben Cowell), Joshua Renner (Shannon), Jagger Pitkat, and her eleven great-grandchildren. She will be remembered always as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend whose love shaped generations.
While no measure of time would have ever been enough to spend with Agnes, her family is immensely grateful for all the years they shared together and finds comfort knowing she is reunited with her beloved Ben and the many loved ones who went before her. Her legacy lives on in the kindness she showed, the compassion she taught, and the love she poured so freely into everyone fortunate enough to know her.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Agnes by extending a kindness to someone in need — a gesture she offered effortlessly throughout her ninety-seven years.
