Alan Carnig Alemian died on February 8, 2026 at the age of 84. Alan was the devoted father of Aram Alemian of MD and the son of Armenian Genocide Survivors, Sarkis and Asdghig (Starrie) Alemian. He was the loving brother of Susan Alemian Bentley of PA, Stephan Alemian and his wife Sharon of Hanson, MA, Claire Alemian of Weymouth, MA, the late Edward Alemian and his widow, Alice McMasters of FL, the late Sylvia Pope of Weymouth, MA and the late Commander Haig S. Alemian USN and his widow, Jeannette of VA. He is also survived by 44 nieces and nephews.
Alan grew up in Weymouth MA and spent much of his adult life developing health and community programs in Africa. Following his graduation from Tufts University with a degree in Biology, Alan served with distinction in the Peace Corps as a volunteer in Uganda. He continued his work in the Peace Corps as Associate Director in Sierra Leone where he formed a lasting friendship with the Daramy family. Mabinty and her sons remained a large part of Alan's life. After returning to the U.S. and receiving a Master's degree in Public Health from Tulane University, he joined Africare in the 1970's. Alan led major development and health initiatives across sub-Saharan Africa. He improved health outcomes for over 31,000 children and 48,400 women. He supported programs in health, agriculture and community empowerment. Over a career spanning several decades, he rose to become Africare's director for East and Anglophone West Africa based in Washington D.C. and served as regional director from the 1980's until his retirement in 2006. His retirement was filled with travel, visits with friends and relatives, and countless home improvement projects. A private burial was held on February 11 in Germantown, MD.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the 40th day Requiem Service which will be held on March 22 at St. Stephens Armenian Apostolic Church, Watertown MA 02472. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Stephen's Armenian Apostolic Church, 1 Artsakh Street, Watertown, MA, 02472, or Camp Haiastan, 722 Summer Street, Franklin, MA 02038.
