Alan F. Brooks

1936 - 2025

Alan Fletcher Brooks, 89, of Avon, passed away on November 18, 2025, at St. Francis Hospital, with his wife, Marie-Pier (Barbier) Brooks, and his three children by his side.

Born on June 23, 1936, in Springfield, MA, Alan was the second son of Clarence R. Brooks and Virginia M. (Jerguson) Brooks. He made his home in Simsbury and Avon for the past 65 years.

After two years at the Fay School in Southborough, MA, Alan headed to Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut, where he began what would become a 74-year relationship. While a student at Westminster, he distinguished himself as a student leader serving on the Prefect Board, the John Hay Society, and the Dance Committee. He was also a standout athlete and leader on the football, basketball, and track and field teams. Alan then earned his Bachelor of Arts in English from Wesleyan University in '59 while also playing pivotal roles on both the football and track and field teams. He later earned his Master of Liberal Studies from Wesleyan in 1967.

After a one-year stint as a teacher and coach at Englewood School for Boys (Dwight Englewood) in New Jersey, Alan dedicated his professional life to Westminster, where he either worked or volunteered for over 65 years. He was the School's first Director of Admissions, a long-time and very successful Director of Development, a House Master, a coach of multiple teams, and an advisor. In retirement, he served as the Director of Westminster's 125th Anniversary Celebration and continued to volunteer as a coach for the track and field. In 2013, the school established the Alan F. Brooks Distinguished Alumni Award to honor individuals who exemplify the school's mission and values in thought, word, and deed.

Over his life, Alan served as the Chairman of the NAIS Committee on Boarding Schools and was the Chair of the Board of Cobb Montessori School in Simsbury, CT. He also served on several other boards, including Greater Hartford Montessori Schools, the Planned Giving Group of Connecticut, and, most recently, the Board of Trustees of Fay School. Alan also tutored elementary students at underserved schools in the Greater Hartford Area and served as the class agent for his graduating classes at both Westminster and Wesleyan.

Alan was a voracious reader (particularly early American History) and a member of two book clubs. He also spent the last 30 years competing successfully in the shot put and discus under USA Track and Field, earning his final medal in the summer of 2024 at 88 years old. He spent countless summer hours on his boat, "Grit and Grace," with family and friends in the Boothbay Harbor Region. He was a faithful New York Giants fan, a self-proclaimed barbecue master, and a cigar aficionado. However, no hobby meant more to him than vocally supporting his three children's athletic careers, whether as players or coaches.

As dedicated as Alan was to his work, he made time to build, nourish, and enjoy a wonderful, connected family with his wife of 56 years, Marie-Pier. In addition to MP, Alan is survived by his three children: Fletcher Brooks of Boston, MA; Ethan Brooks and his partner Michelle Akacki of Atlanta, GA; and Rebecca Brooks and her husband Adolphus Clinton of Southport, ME. He also leaves his sister-in-law, Claire Brooks of Southport, ME; his younger brother, Richard Brooks, and wife, Jan Brooks, of Bluffton, SC; and his younger sister, Barbara (Brooks) Benson and her husband, Craig Benson, of Bloomington, IN. He will also be lovingly remembered by his granddaughter, August Brooks Clinton. Alan's second grandchild, Allyn Barbier Clinton, was born four days after he passed; she will know him through ample stories of care, humor, loyalty, and love.

He is predeceased by his twin sister, Ellen (Brooks) Baldwin, and his older brother Phillip Brooks.

Alan's legacy endures in the many lives he touched. He approached each day with sincerity, dedication, and quiet strength, and those who knew him will carry his spirit forward.

Services will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at 1:00 pm at Andrews Memorial Chapel at Westminster School. Reception to follow.
