Send Flowers Plant A Tree
Alan (Al) Schmidt, 90, of Londonderry, Vermont, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 20.
Al was born on April 1, 1935, in St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated from Lehigh University and earned his MBA from Cornell University. He spent many years working in finance in New York City, but he was most proud of his part-time career as a ski instructor. Al taught skiing at Stratton for more than 50 years, a record that has yet to be surpassed. His final run on the mountain was with his two grandchildren, Gavin and Kayla, whom he loved dearly.
Al was known for his bold personality, his unrelenting sense of humor, and his beloved brown truck. His roots in Vermont date back to the mid-1960s, when he helped build his home in Bondville. He loved Vermont, and nothing made him feel more at home than striking up a conversation in town with someone who shared his interest in heavy equipment, construction or skiing.
Al is survived by his son, Steve; his daughter-in-law, Jackie; his grandchildren, Gavin and Kayla, and his brother, Duane.
A private celebration of life will be held on January 3 with family to honor Alan's life.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Vermont Natural Resources Council.
The family wishes to thank the communities of Bondville and Londonderry for the spirit of kindness and connection that meant so much to Al. His legacy lives on in the people he taught, the stories he told, and the family and community he loved.
