Alan Ross Thoburn

Alan Ross Thoburn passed away on January 27, 2026, at the age of 81 in West Hills, CA. Born on June 14, 1944, Alan, affectionately known as Al to his friends and PopPop to his grandchildren, brought joy and laughter wherever he went. His ability to light up a room with his humor and warmth will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Alan served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1970, a period that shaped much of his early adulthood. Post-military, he pursued his education at Cal State University in Northridge while simultaneously working as a carpet installer. His career trajectory took a pioneering turn into the solar industry during its nascent stages in California. Alan eventually found his niche in the plating rack industry, where he skillfully designed and repaired racks used for a diverse array of products, from printed circuit boards to wheelchairs.
Beyond his professional life, Alan was a devout member of the West Hills Church, where Pastor John Drummond played a significant role in his spiritual journey.
Alan's hobbies included golfing, bowling, and coaching his sons, Matthew and Christopher, in various sports, showcasing his dedication to his family and community. His vibrant personality made him a beloved coach and mentor to many.
He leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Cynthia Thoburn, his children, Matthew Thoburn (Allie), Courtney Schleizer (Justin), and Christopher Thoburn (Sasha), and his cherished grandchildren, Francine, Olivia, Levi, and Jaxon. Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy May Thoburn and John William Thoburn.
A service to celebrate Alan's life will be held on Friday, March 20th at 1:00 PM at West Hills Church, 7475 Fallbrook Ave, West Hills, CA 91307.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Alan's memory can be made to Ronald McDonald House or Saint Jude's Hospital, honoring his compassionate spirit and lifelong commitment to helping others.
