Albert Earl Southworth Jr. 94, of Rancho Santa Fe, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2025, surrounded by family. Born in Santa Barbara, California, Al was known for his curiosity and adventurous spirit. He excelled in sports at San Dieguito Union High School and played football at UC Santa Barbara, where he met his wife, Sandy. They shared 69 years together.

Al served in the Korean War before graduating in 1956 from UCSB. He dedicated his career to education at San Dieguito High School, coaching football and track, and founding the surf PE program. As a member of the San Diego Track Officials Association, he started track meets for 35 years. Summers were spent lifeguarding and diving, reflecting his love for the ocean.

Al cherished traveling to remote parts of the world as well as making frequent trips to Baja with family and friends. At home, he enjoyed working outdoors on his property. He was proud of his children and grandchildren, sharing time with them and cheering them on at sporting events.

Al is survived by his wife Sandy; children Brad (Shay) and Bonnie (Tom); grandchildren Rachael, Matthew, and Alexander; sister Phyllis Tutor; a niece, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Madelon.

A celebration of life will be held in the New Year. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.

He will be deeply missed.
