Alden Coe Hess March 19, 1938 - December 25, 2025
It is with great sorrow that we share that our father, Alden Hess, passed away on Christmas Day. A day that is typically spent celebrating with family and friends; however we will now also remember and celebrate our father's life in years to come.
For those of you who knew Alden, we are sure you would agree he led a full life and would want us to think of all the good times and memories he shared. He was not only driven to have a positive impact throughout his professional career; he also was strongly motivated to lead by example and contribute his efforts to the success of many civic and community activities and services.
After graduating from Mount Union College in 1961 (where he met his wife of 61 years), he continued his education by going to classes in the evening and earned his MBA from Pace University while working full-time. Alden's professional career spanned over nearly 3 decades in the financial sector where he participated in the development of some institutions still in use today. He spent the later years of his working career doing something he truly loved, coaching and teaching at Morristown Beard School.
Throughout his life, Alden was very involved in our hometown, Mendham's Mountain View School Board, Public Library, Hilltop Presbyterian Church, and was instrumental in starting the boy's lacrosse team at West Morris Mendham High School. Some may remember our father handing you your 8th Grade graduation diploma or working alongside him building the Library's Bookworm Labor Day float, or his bellowing voice reading scripture, or possibly the smell of his pipe while practicing lacrosse.
In addition to all the above, he volunteered coaching recreational youth sports, took his family on numerous memorable vacations, taught Sunday School, stayed active in the SAE chapter and Morris County Republican Committee, and enjoyed the simpler things in life like spending time with family and friends.
Alden is preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Hess and Allison Hess Burritt; his wife, Betty Reid Hess; and brother, T. George Hess. He is survived by his children, Ellyn Jayne Hess Celeste of Seminole, FL; Gayle Ann Lodato of Ooltewah, TN; and Scott Alden Hess of Chapel Hill, NC. He will be greatly missed by his five grandchildren, Giffin Scott Hess of Alpharetta, GA; Jaden Anthony Celeste of Seminole, FL; Olive Hess of Raleigh, NC; Ashlyn Jayne Celeste of Seminole, FL; and Gabriella Ann Lodato of Ooltewah, TN.
May Alden always be remembered as a generous, insightful man who gave a lot to all the people, activities, and causes most important to him.
