Alfred (Al) John Giannell was born in Oakland, May 18, 1929 to Bernard and Marie Giannell. They moved to San Leandro in 1942.
After high school Al joined the Navy reserves, then was on active duty from 1952-1954. While in the Navy he traveled to Japan and Korea as a communications electronics technician. After his honorable discharge he worked for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle for several years.
He returned to Oakland to pursue a college degree in Electrical Engineering. After earning his degree, he worked as a nuclear engineer, then spent the majority of his career working as a civilian at the Concord Naval Weapons Station as an electrical engineer.
Al married Marilyn Maffeo on August 2, 1958. They had been married 60 years when Marilyn passed in February 2019. They lived in Oakland until 1965 when they moved to Pleasant Hill where they raised their two daughters Maria and Anna. They were also very active and involved grandparents to Christina, Isaac, and Felicia.
Al enjoyed gardening, working in the yard, growing summer vegetables, making wine with the family, and going to Turlock to work on the family farm. Al was an active member of the Contra Costa Farm Bureau from 1975 to 2019. He was also an active member of Christ the King Church, volunteering as an usher and serving coffee and donuts after mass.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Marie Giannell; wife Marilyn Maffeo Giannell; brother Bernard Giannell, Jr.; sister Audrey Noel; niece Michelle Noel Swain and nephew John Maffeo. He will be greatly missed by his daughters Maria Giannell (Scott Maze) and Anna Giannelli (Christopher) Good; his grandchildren Christina Giannelli (Jeffery Princko), Isaac Good (K.T. Stapley) and Felicia (Robert) Grebe, and his many nieces and nephews.
