Alfred Victor Pippin

1941 - 2026

The world is a little less bright with the passing of Alfred Victor Pippin, Jr. on April 1, 2026. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, after a long and courageous battle with several medical challenges.

Born in New Hampshire on June 1, 1941 to Alfred (Sr.) and Margaret Pippin, Al soon moved to Maine and began a lifetime of learning, adventures and a little bit of mischief. He set out early to live life to its fullest as he immersed himself in a spectrum of activities;, from train hopping to race car driving at Beech Ridge. Maine provided unique opportunities for him to experience lobstering, sailing, island living and so much more. His adolescence culminated in service to his country; specializing in ammunition trajectories in the US Army. While his duties concluded honorably in 1962, pride in his service and the camaraderie with other veterans always remained.

Throughout the expanse of those early years, Al was banking his experiences and soaking up knowledge to set the foundation for the one job that he came to love most…buying and selling things, especially antiques. Al’s knowledge became vast. He truly knew something about everything and was happy to share his knowledge. On the rare occasion that he didn’t have an answer, ”he had a guy for that” and would point you in the right direction. A legendary fixture at the Arundel Flea Market, he was fondly referred to as, "The King of Arundel". Throughout 50+ years of refining his craft, Al gained the respect and admiration of friends, family and associates who knew he was the one to go to for unique pieces and expertise. He was always on the hunt. His soft blue eyes would sparkle above an impish grin when he was about to reveal a new “find” or impart his knowledge on an inquisitive audience.

While his legacy in the local antique world was remarkable, his greatest love was truly his family and, to them, he was their hero. Al spent his last 41 years with the love of his life, Trudy A. Dunphy Pippin, whom he married in 1997. In her, he found his perfect balance and an unexpected partner in his antiquing quests as well as life’s other adventures; many of which included their cherished grandchildren and other family members. Together they journeyed through the ups and downs of life finding the perfect balance of push and pull; give and take. While she never knew what unexpected “treasure” might show up next in their cozy home, she consistently adored him and described him as, “my everything”. His adoration for her was equal, clearly evident in his latter days when the medical staff caring for him complimented the dedication of his efforts to get well. He pointed at Trudy and explained, “Look at her over there…I want to go home to her.” Al never quit. He understood that goals are accomplished one step at a time and he lived his life accordingly to the very end; he never gave up.

Amongst his other joys, Al was blessed with 3 wonderful children from a previous marriage; David Pippin and Cheryl Pippin (who predeceased him) and Stephen (Randi) Pippin whose hearts are broken in his absence. Al was also predeceased by a brother, Jim Pippin; and a grandson, Sean. He is survived by siblings, Frank (Diane) Pippin, Jenny (Ernie) Miller-Stewart and Maggie (Bob) Curtis; sister-in-law, Brenda Pippin; grandchildren, Kristy, Jeff (Mattie), Erik (Amanda), Karen, David and Philip; 11 great-grand children; and countless beloved nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Al touched innumerable lives and taught everyone close to him something of value. Not only did he share his knowledge and wisdom, he also shared his love for life and living which inspired those around him to discover and to truly live as well. With that, a piece of him will remain within us all. He will be sadly missed by family, friends and colleagues alike, but we will find comfort knowing that he is at rest; enjoying a sweet reunion with the loved ones who passed before him.

To honor his wishes, a casual Celebration of Life will take place on Sunday, April 26th, from 2-6 pm at Best Western Merry Manor Inn 700 Main Street, South Portland, Maine.
