Louisville - Alma Whelan, 84, passed away on December 28, 2025 in Louisville, Kentucky. She was born on September 20, 1941, in Louisville Ky to the late Chester and Dorothy Masters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas "Jerry" Whelan; her brothers, Robert and Louis Masters; and her infant son, Michael.
Alma was a loving wife and mother. She was known by all for her love, kindness and compassion for all her many family members and friends. As the oldest child of a large family, she served as a second matriarch for her five siblings.
Alma spent her career taking care of others as well. She began at Jefferson County Public Schools as a Teachers Aide and then later worked at the Central Planning office at JCPS.
Alma is survived by five children, Kim Philpot (Allen), Craig Whelan (Valerie), Karen Kaberle (Rick), Martin Whelan (Tiffany), and Larissa Reece (Chris). She was a cherished Granny to Joshua Lee, Lindsay Smith, Brian Whelan, Jacob Kaberle, Corey Whelan, Natasha Moberly, Benjamin Reece, Colin Whelan, Dallas Whelan, and Erin Whelan. Additionally, Alma was a proud great granny to Alyvia Whelan, Tyler Whelan, Zoey Whelan, Khloe Whelan, Ethan Lee, Camden Lee, Sawyer Lee, Kate Smith, Augustine Reece, Clara Reece, Margaret Moberly and Rowan Moberly. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Saturday January 10th from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the Church followed by a service at 2 p.m. at Hurstbourne Christian Church, located at 601 Nottingham Parkway, Louisville KY 40222. The service will be officiated by her grandson, Reverend Benjamin Reece.

The family is thankful for Hosparus support and the exceptional care provided by Tricia Cobbler APRN, who lovingly cared for both Alma and Jerry for nearly six years.
The family would also like to thank the incredibly compassionate and caring staff in the memory care unit at Vitality at Stony Brook. When our journey felt difficult the staff supported mom and our entire family, enabling her to pass in peace and dignity with family at her side.
Alma will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
