Jake passed away peacefully in his home on November 30, 2025. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Connie Jacobsen; his four children, Larry, Ann Marie, Peter, and Nancy; his son in laws David & Robby; daughter in law Laura; his fourteen grandchildren; his sisters, Janet and Eleanor; and by a massive collection of friends spanning the nation.
Jake was the very definition of a proud United States Marine, serving in the Corps from September 1962 to January 1966, and later as a National Guardsman in Indiana. The values of the USMC—honor, courage, and commitment—were the foundation of his life and the driving force behind his decades of service to veterans and his community.
He dedicated his life to supporting veterans, from his roots in Northwest Indiana to the past 20 years in Homestead, Florida. He was especially passionate about ensuring that WWII veterans received the medals and recognition they deserved. He was even more passionate about supporting active service members and their families. As a business owner, he remained deeply involved in service organizations including Kiwanis, Rotary, the Elks, and the VFW to name just a few. In retirement he championed the Military Affairs Council in Homestead FL, essentially re-enlisting himself as a liaison between the community and HARB.
Jake's honors and recognitions are extensive, but among the most meaningful were:
Commandant, Marine Corps League—Marine of the Year, Indiana
President, Kiwanis Northwest Indiana
Blue Ribbon Committee, Merrillville Police Department
Honorary Conch, Florida Keys
Honorary Commander - 93D Fighter Squadron - Makos - HARB
Jake's legacy is one of unwavering service, profound patriotism, and a lifetime dedicated to lifting others. He was a man of deep faith whose greatest joy came from his family. He loved the outdoors, especially the thrill of deep-sea fishing in the turquoise waters of the Florida Keys. To those who knew him, he was nothing short of legendary—steadfast, spirited, and full of heart. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever honored.
Memorial services will be held in this order:
Honor Ceremony at Homestead AFB - Friday January 23rd 2026
First United Methodist church - Saturday January 24th 2026
Lastly, in keeping with his love for the ocean, a dignified burial-at-sea ceremony will be held Sunday January 25th 2026. His ashes committed to the deep with honor.
