Obituary
On October 11, 1955 Alvin Scott was first born to Corine Garrett in Detroit, MI
He was preceded in death by his mother Corine Beasley; father John Scott; and sister Shiela Beasley.
Alvin is survived by his beloved wife Cynthia; daughter Angela; son Michael; grandson Raiden and siblings Milladge, John, Ron, Jeffrey, Eric, Fred, Edward (Jr.), Franklyn, and Tanya. He also leaves behind a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends whose lives were touched by his kindness and generosity.
From an early age, Alvin demonstrated a remarkable talent and entrepreneurial spirit. While still a student at Northwestern High School, he crafted his first suit for one of his teachers— More than a decade later, Alvin encountered that same teacher—now a school principal—who proudly shared that he still wears that green suit Alvin had made. This moment was emblematic of Alvin's enduring impact on those around him.
Alvin's professional journey was as diverse as it was meaningful. He served on CB Patrol in his neighborhood, contributing to the safety and well-being of his community. His commitment to service extended further when he operated the Community Computer Lab (CompuPlay) at MLK Presbyterian Community Church, helping others gain access to technology, bridging the digital divide and learning opportunities. Enjoying 24-hour gaming/movie/music night and Teen Lock-In on Halloween giving our "future leaders" a positive fun environment. Also worked with Detroit City Council members to advocate for a newly built Heilmann Recreation Center (Awarded $8M state-of-the art facility) to help the highest demographic of youth in the low-income community was a MUST NEEDED community resource to break the negative economic and social environment. Governor and City Council recognized his community service with "Letter of Recognition."
One of Alvin's greatest joys came from coaching volleyball. He lived, breathed and slept VB year-round, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to teaching every aspect of the game. Whether mentoring beginners or refining the skills of seasoned players, Alvin found purpose and fulfillment in sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for volleyball. His dream, when he hit the Michigan Lottery, the plan was to create a Multi-Court Volleyball Mega Facility inside the City of Detroit.
He also worked as a security guard at Huntington Place (formerly Cobo Hall), where he took pleasure in ensuring the safety of visitors and staff alike. Beyond work and coaching, Alvin found peace and pleasure riding throughout Detroit with the Slow Roll community or cruising along Belle Isle, Riverwalk, and Dequindre Cut on his adult Delta-style recumbent trike as Bystanders marvel and Photographers capture images of the "coolest" style adult trike (asking, "where can I get THAT trike") he was so pride of his royal blue trike and ready to share the story of how Alvin got his trike (Craig's List).
Those who knew Alvin will remember not only his talents and contributions but also the sayings he shared—words that reflected his wisdom and humor—and the many photos capturing moments with family members, fellow coaches and players from the volleyball community, friends, and coworkers.
May Alvin Scott's memory bring comfort to all who knew him and continue to inspire those whose lives he enriched through service, sport, and unwavering dedication.
