Amy Ann Hilsbos Beres passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on March 30, 2026, after a brief illness. Amy was born on November 16, 1943, at St. Vincents Hospital in Manhattan, NY, to John and Amy Hilsbos. She was raised with her sister, Susan, in New York and Virginia where she attended elementary school at St. Dominic’s and later at Saint James. She attended high school at Marymount in Arlington, VA with her beloved cousin Cathy Molumby and later she transferred to and graduated from Falls Church High School. Amy made the most of her high school years where she was a member of a sorority; enjoyed many social activities; learned to dance; and created lifelong friendships. Most importantly, it was at Falls Church High where Amy met her future husband, Allan Beres. After high school Amy attended Sacred Heart College in North Carolina where she earned an associate degree.
In 1965, Amy and Allan married. Together they had three children and made their home in Falls Church, VA. Amy was devoted to her family. She spent years dropping off and picking up her kids from sports practices; school activities; and friends’ houses. She created a home where everyone was welcome, and it was often filled with family and friends of all ages who found comfort, wisdom, fun, and solace at Amy’s dining room table.
Amy was also a teacher. Over the years she taught classes and served as a long-term substitute at Our Lady of Good Counsel and Kilmer Middle School in Vienna, VA, and Saint James Catholic School in Falls Church. In addition to her professional career, Amy was active in her community. She served on the Poplar Heights Recreation Association board, was a swim team official, and was the Director of the Saint James CYO for many years. In addition to all of this Amy played on the woman’s tennis team at Poplar Heights and, along with Allan, played in a duplicate bridge group for over 20 years. This group and their families became lifelong friends and enjoyed many vacations, trips, and adventures together.
In 1998, Amy and Allan moved to Duck, NC where they laid down new roots and became an integral part of the community. Amy joined Holy Redeemer Catholic Church; attended bible study and a book club at Duck Methodist Church; volunteered at Ruthie’s Kitchen; supported the Beach Food Pantry; and served as an official at the polls during elections. She loved doing yoga and water aerobics and through all of these activities Amy forged meaningful friendships with other local residents. Most importantly, Amy opened her home and cultivated it as a cherished space for her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren to visit, spend quality time, celebrate birthdays and holidays, and explore the natural beauty of the Outer Banks. Duck was special to Amy and central to the traditions she created and the legacy she leaves.
After spending almost 30 years in Duck, Amy and Allan moved to the Jefferson in Arlington, VA in 2025. Amy loved being closer to her roots and the family and friends who live there. Once again, she jumped right in to become a part of this new community at the Jefferson. She enjoyed the ladies wine nights on Mondays, played bingo and did chair aerobics, and loved to sit and enjoy a danish or cheeseburger in the courtyard. Forever committed to her Catholic faith, Amy joined Saint Charles parish where she was an active parishioner. In November 2025, on her own initiative after learning of a critical shortage, Amy continued her lifelong commitment to community service by organizing a canned food drive for the parish food pantry.
Almost above all else, Amy was known for drawing energy and joy from engaging with people. Throughout her life she provided sage advice, wise counsel, and a shoulder to cry on to everyone who sought or needed it (whether they knew it or not!). Perhaps the biggest benefactors of Amy’s generous spirit were her seven grandchildren whom she adored. Each one of Amy's grandchildren had a special, unique, and meaningful relationship with her, and each was with her in person or in spirit, loving and caring for her to the very end of her life.
Amy is survived by her beloved husband, Allan; her sons, Allan (Tonya) of Centreville, VA; Timothy (Jill) of Falls Church, VA; and Katherine Sullivan (Mark) of Georgetown, WDC; her grandchildren, Bianca, Thomas, Bailey, Caroline, Lily, Allan, Jake; and her sister, Susan Kane of Kilmarnock, VA.
A Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2026, from 5pm to 8pm at Murphy’s Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA 22203, and a Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 10, 2026, at 11:00am at St. Charles Catholic Church, 3304 Washington Boulevard, Arlington, VA 22201. Following the Funeral Mass, the family will host a reception at Washington Golf and Country Club, 3017 N. Glebe Road, Arlington, VA 22207. All are welcome to join family and friends as they gather to remember the richness of Amy's life and the joy she brought to their lives.
