The End of an Era

Anne Hartley (Mackell) passed away peacefully in her Toronto home, surrounded by family, on Friday, April 17th.

A devoted mother, wife and partner, Anne is remembered with love by her son Declan (Carol), daughter Lisa (John) and granddaughter Lauren. She is predeceased by her husband, Brian, and her siblings, Maura, Sean, Declan and Patricia, dear friend Gordon, and is survived by her brother Desmond.

Anne was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She arrived in Canada for her brother's wedding. She met her husband-to-be, Brian Hartley, soon after and settled in Toronto. She began her career as a nurse in Liverpool, England but after coming to Canada and starting her family, she realized a passion for wine and became the first female wine consultant in Canada. From this she graduated to become the Director of Product Management at the LCBO and received many accolades for her work from the wines and spirits industry, including the prestigious Order of Agricultural Merit (Ordre du Mérite agricole) from France.

Anne was the matriarch of the family and a trailblazer in her own right. She loved her family deeply as was evidenced by her incredible generosity over the years.

Anne will be sadly missed by her friends and family and her legacy will live on through their beautiful memories. This summer, a celebration of life will take place in her honour.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the team at the Temmy Latner Center for Palliative Care for their outstanding and compassionate care through Anne's illness. Donations may be made in Anne's name to the Temmy Latner Centre at Mount Sinai Hospital.
