Annie Lou (Ann) Smith, a lifelong resident of Gary, Indiana, passed away after a remarkable 100-year journey of love, service, and dedication to her family and community. Born on April 27, 1925, as the third of eight children to Otto and Olar Smith, Annie lived a life of purpose and determination.
Annie graduated from Gary Roosevelt High School in 1944, marking her commitment to personal growth and education. She was an avid reader and was known for having a collection of novels which she often shared with family and friends. From an early age, she professed her faith in Jesus Christ, which guided her throughout her life.
Annie's professional journey was diverse and evidence of her incredible work ethic. During the late 1940s-1960s, she worked at The Hotel Gary as a server. In the late 1960s - early 1980s she worked as a Coordinator at Westville Mental Hospital for Children. Annie also held various positions at Gary Neighborhood Services, Brunswick Childcare Services and Miller School/Conrad C. Ott Building.
In 1945, Annie's marriage to Joseph Mattingly was highlighted by the birth of their son, Reginald Mattingly. Several years later Annie also celebrated the birth of her daughter Chantay Hudson. Annie was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Olar Smith; brothers, Albert W. Smith, Eddie C. Smith, William Smith, and Arthur W. Smith; and sisters, Ruby Smith, Rosie Johnson, and Olar Mae Johnson. Annie leaves behind a large and loving family, including her son Reginald C. Mattingly (Theresa) and daughter Chantay Hudson, as well as multiple grandchildren: Courtney (James) Williams, Erika Mattingly, Tawana Crump, and Qiana Staples. She also leaves her loving great-grandchildren: Kevontay Staples, Michael Williams, Montay Robinson, Ariyana Hayes, and Anna Williams; her great-great-grandchildren: Sky Staples, Khyren Robinson, Summer Staples and Star Staples. In addition to a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members, Annie also leaves her special niece and nephew, Linda and Jonathan Johnson and her "bonus" children, Vera Gaston and Joseph (Michelle) H. Mattingly.
Annie Lou Smith's life was marked by faithfulness, endurance, and ingenuity. She leaves a legacy of wisdom, humor and love. She will be profoundly missed and gratefully remembered by all who loved her.
