In Loving Memory of Anthony Steven Deutsch
One year ago, on January 14, 2025, we said goodbye to Tony Deutsch—our beloved father, grandfather, music lover, partner, and friend.
Tony was born on February 19, 1947, in Huntington Woods, Michigan, to Vivian and William Deutsch. He moved to San Diego in 1971 after marrying his first wife, Nancy Goldberg, and graduating from law school, citing the Beach Boys as his inspiration for moving to California.
Tony loved nothing more than spending time with his two children, Amy and Brian; their families; and his longtime partner, Robin Seigle. He found happiness in time spent together—whether through travel, conversations about movies and books, enjoying live music, or sharing a nice meal.
Music was a constant companion throughout his life, serving as the soundtrack to cherished memories. His incredible, encyclopedia-like memory was a wealth of musical knowledge. Along with that encyclopedic understanding of music, he held the same vast knowledge of movies. A day spent at a movie theater was a day well spent, and throughout his life he could recall famous jazz lineups, as well as great directors and actors from an array of films spanning more than 80 years.
Tony loved living in San Diego. He was a longtime season ticket holder of the San Diego Chargers and enjoyed going to Padres games with his children and grandsons. He loved the beach and good food and was a regular at many restaurants in the North Park area. No matter what you were craving, he knew all the great spots in town.
Tony was sober and a devoted member of the AA community for more than 22 years—a proud achievement that charted his way to becoming a more present, thoughtful, and generous confidant.
Though a year has passed, Tony’s spirit remains present in the lives he touched, in the music he loved, the stories he shared, and the family that continues to carry his memory forward. He is deeply missed every day and forever remembered with love. We miss you, Bubba!
As a continuation of his generous spirit, Tony donated his body to UCSD’s School of Medicine. A small memorial was held with close friends and family. A small plaque memorializes him at Temple Solel in Cardiff.
Listen to a good tune, watch a great movie, or yell at the TV during a great San Diego sporting event—and hold his memory dear, as we all do.
