Arlene Unzeitig

1939 - 2026

Arlene Unzeitig, 87, a native of Chicago, Illinois, and a longtime resident of Ashburn, Virginia, passed away on April 16, 2026. A woman of great heart and character, Arlene will be remembered as a devoted mother, a dedicated professional, and a steadfast believer in the values of education and hard work.

She was born on April 11, 1939 to Mary and Paul Ushka. Raised in Chicago, Arlene was the proud mother of four children, to whom she was a guiding light and a source of constant encouragement. With determination and grace, she earned her way from humble beginnings to a professional career at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago. Her commitment to her work and her community earned her the distinction of an honorary doctorate, an achievement she held with great pride.

Arlene lived by the conviction that through education and a strong work ethic, all things were possible. This philosophy became the bedrock of her family’s life and a legacy that continues through her children and their families.

Arlene’s greatest joy was found in her family. She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Ginni (Mark) Rometty, Joe (Jeanna) Nicosia, Annette Rippert, and Darlene (Dr. Lisa DiFrancesco) Nicosia; and her sister, Diane Ryan.

Her pride extended deeply to the next generations. She was a constant presence in the lives of her grandchildren, celebrating their graduations, weddings, and the launch of their diverse and wonderful careers. In her later years, she was further blessed with 13 great-grandchildren, whose arrival brought her immense happiness and light.

Arlene was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, and friend who touched many lives with her big heart and generous spirit. Whether at a large family gathering, a competitive Rummikub or mahjong match, or during a quiet visit, her warmth and presence made every moment a priceless gift. Her family will remember her as their cornerstone—a woman who modeled dignity, grace, and an unwavering love for those she held dear.
