Arthur "Art" Carlson was a giant - both in stature and in the lives of those who knew him. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, "Big Art" passed away peacefully at home on February 18, 2026 at the age of 74.
Art was born on September 30, 1951, in Panama City, Florida, to Harold and Joni Carlson.Though he grew up in Orlando, he considered Tallahassee his true home. In addition to graduating from Colonial High School where he was Senior Class Treasurer, he was a proud alumnus of Florida State University and a lifelong Seminoles fan. Whether cheering in person or watching from home, Art rarely missed an opportunity to support FSU baseball, basketball, or football. His love for the Noles was unwavering and became one of the many ways he connected with beloved friends and family over the years.
On December 28, 1974, he married the love of his life, Lynn Lowry. Together, they built a life rooted in loyalty, laughter, and deep devotion to family. Art was a steady and loving presence who believed in showing up for the people he loved.
In his early years, Art served as a high school swim coach, a role that reflected his gift for mentorship and encouragement. He took pride in staying connected with swimmers whose lives he influenced, many of whom remained grateful for his guidance long after they left the pool. For most of his professional life, Art worked as a CPA and later retired from Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, where he was respected for his integrity and dedication.
Art found joy in life's simple and meaningful moments. He loved spending time in the mountains with friends, walking at Seagrove beach, and settling in with a good book. He also loved to travel, tour battlefields across the US and Europe, enjoy Broadway shows, and taking the ferry. A fierce competitor at heart, he could challenge anyone to a game of Trivial Pursuit and most always win. He was known for his unforgettable "Art-isms" — witty sayings and bits of wisdom that will continue to live on in the stories and laughter of those who loved him. He also loved giving people nicknames, and if you were lucky enough to receive one, it was a true honor.
Above all, Art was devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife Lynn and their three children, Robert (Leah), Katy (Bartley), and Will (Candace). His beloved grandchildren knew him as Big Pops. Grey and Lane Carlson; Lowry, Emery, Peter, and Carly Sides; and Owen and Shaw Carlson will deeply miss his playful antics, big hugs, and words of wisdom. He is also survived by his older brother Hal (Vicki) and partner in crime, brother-in-law John (Misha). A host of extended family members and dear friends, including the close-knit Full Circle group, will carry his memory forward with love.
Art's legacy is one of strength, loyalty, humor, and deep love for those around him. He will be remembered not only for the life he lived, but for the countless lives he touched along the way. A celebration of life will be held on April 11 2026, 1:30 PM at Centerville Conservation Community Lake House. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial donations to the American Cancer Society in honor of Art Carlson.
