Dear Friends and Family,
I wanted to share a heartfelt tribute to Avanell Nelson, reflecting on the remarkable life she lived and the legacy she leaves behind. Born in Quitman, Arkansas on December 29, 1938, to Chester Britton and Ivy Madeleine Cooper, Avanell's journey began with a move to Plainsburg, California at the age of five, and soon after to Winton, where she immersed herself in the community. During her school years, Avanell became a majorette with the band and attended Merced High School, graduating in 1956.

After graduation, Avanell ventured to Los Angeles, working in Export/Import for a year before returning to Winton. It was there that Avanell began dating Elden Nelson, leading to their marriage on May 3, 1958. Their loving partnership lasted until Elden's passing in January 2019, and together they welcomed two children, Berton Craig and Sharon.

Avanell's passion for sports shined brightly, playing softball at a semi-pro level and coaching girls' little league for many years. She later took up bowling, joining the Western Women's Pro Bowling Association in the mid-1970s. Avanell balanced family life while working as a carhop at the A&W Drive-In in Atwater, eventually pursuing a career at Farmers Insurance until retirement.

Her dedication to the community was unwavering. Avanell served as President of the Winton VFW Women's Auxiliary, holding the honor of charter membership, and also led both the Winton Historical Society and the Winton Old Timers, always striving to keep local traditions alive.

Avanell is survived by her daughter Sharon and son-in-law Kent LeBarts, as well as nieces Ruth Evans, Carla Corn, Kathy Bartlett, Diane Keener, Theda Nunn, LaShawn Jimenez, and Mandy Cooper, and nephews John Nelson, Chester Faris, Phil Cooper, and Alex Cooper. Avanell was preceded in death by her beloved husband Elden V. Nelson, son Berton Craig Nelson, parents Chester and Ivy Madeleine Cooper, father and mother-in-law Reuben and Bertha Nelson, sister Ivaleine Kay Cooper, brothers Phil and Alfred Cooper, and sister and brother-in-law Gary and Mary Brookins, Donald and Teddy Nelson.

Through every chapter of their lives, Avanell inspired those around them with dedication, kindness, and boundless energy. Her memory will be cherished by everyone whose lives she touched.

Graveside Services for Avanell will be held on Friday April 10, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Winton Cemetery, 7651 Almond Ave., Winton, CA 95388.
