Avigail Halpin

1930 - 2026

Avigail “Avi” Halpin passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, in Tamarac, Florida, at the age of 96. Born on January 7, 1930, Avi grew up on the Lower East Side of New York. She was raised by a loving mother who instilled in her the courage and confidence that would shape Avi’s own approach to raising a family.

Avi is survived by her devoted husband, James “Jim” Halpin, whom she married in 1998, and by her beloved children, whom she referred to as her best friends: Marc Lupowitz, David (Lillian) Lupowitz, and Helen Lupowitz.

Avi was a cherished “Grandmoo” to Melissa Vélez-Luce, Jonathan Vélez (Gina), Emilio Vélez, Matthew Guttilla, Steven Luce, and 14 great-grandchildren. Avi is also survived by her stepchildren, Cristen Perkins and her children, Kevin and Aled; and Eric Halpin (Pamela) and their children, Matthew and Alex; as well as sisters-in-law Jeanette Thatcher, Paula Meyer, and Sister Catherine Halpin, R.D.C. She was preceded in death by her parents, and daughter-in-law Patricia Geernaert.

Avi’s life was marked by a passion for learning and helping others. While raising her children, she worked various jobs and later attended Queens College, where she pursued undergraduate studies in Sociology and Psychology before becoming a teacher. She went on to earn two Master’s degrees, one in Special Education and another in Counseling, and found her calling as a guidance counselor in the New York City school system, a role she found tremendously rewarding.

Avi was an avid reader and theater enthusiast, especially during her years in New York City. She loved hosting friends and family, particularly at her beautiful home in Lake Huntington, New York. Her greatest passion, however, was travel. She explored the United States, Canada, Europe, India, Australia, Israel, and most memorably, went on safari in South Africa. She and Jim shared many adventures together, including several cruises.

Avi’s warmth and vivacity were evident in the legendary dinner parties she hosted for Jewish holidays, including her brisket and potato pancakes, which are fondly remembered. She was a wonderful friend, known for her ability to move beyond small talk and foster deep, meaningful conversations. Her life was rich with intellectual pursuits, global adventures, and friendships that were incredibly special to her. She would often travel to be present for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially for special occasions and milestones. She was full of joy, and her son Dave loved to make her laugh.

In an interview with her granddaughter, when asked what advice she had for young people, Avi responded: “Follow your heart. Listen to those little voices in your head that nudge you. I think too often people have regrets. They do what is expected of them or what they think is socially acceptable, and they don’t fulfill the dreams that are within them. Do what you want. Listen to what’s inside of you.”

Avi will be remembered for her hospitality, her devotion to family and friends, and her genuine care for others. She was loved by all who knew her, and her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched.
