Barbara Belknap died September 15th, 2025. She lived a good life and gave confidence and humor to countless others to live well.
A graduate of The Chapin School and Wellesley College she began her teaching career at Chapin, and then ventured westward to teaching and head of school positions in Pittsburgh and Kansas City, returning to New York in 1977 where she served Chapin as head of the middle school before assuming the head of the school position at St. Lukes School, followed by positions at Hewitt and Browning . Her practical understanding of human nature, her vibrant sense of humor, and her compassion served her well in these positions.
During her time in Kansas City, Oliver, a poodle came to her life, and the two of them were normally seen together.
A New Yorker born and bred, , she explored broadly, traveling in Africa and the USSR in the 1960s, Mexico and Central America, China, India, Thailand, Galapagos, Equator, Canada, Bermuda and Europe. Postcards in her legible round lettering came as delightful windows on where she ventured.
She was Aunt Bee to the children of her siblings, and to many others. To some she was "Miss Belknap", to others "Barbara", or "Bee", to all, a solid, reliable friend.
She is predeceased by her companion of many years, David Kaufman, and survived by David's daughter Christina and her nieces and nephew, Debby, Lydia, Gilles, Polly, Ellen, Pam, and Abby
We miss her. She did not want a funeral or a memorial or flowers and she did not suggest a charity, so please share thoughts and memories here if you would like to.
With thanksgiving for the joy of knowing Barbara Belknap.
