Barbara "Granny" Callahan, 85, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2026, in Augusta, Georgia. Born on March 31, 1940, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, she lived a life marked by compassion, dedication, and unwavering love for her family and community.
Barbara's early years were spent in Orangeburg, where she began her education before graduating from Columbia High School. She continued her studies at Phillips Business College and later at Augusta Technical Institute. Her commitment to helping others led her to a career as a nurse assistant—a role through which she touched countless lives with her gentle care and steadfast presence.
Throughout her life, Barbara was deeply devoted to her family. She is lovingly remembered by her children: Jimmie Tanner and his wife Patricia; Glenn Tanner and his wife Barbara; and Susan Michaels and her husband Ronnie. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Aaron Michaels, Daniel Tanner, Benjamin Tanner, Chris Michaels, Brian Tanner, Ashleigh Tanner, Jessica Tanner, and Blake Michaels. She was also blessed with six great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to her later years.
Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved son Robert Tanner; her brother Hampton Callahan; and sisters Margaret Briggman, Emma Huffer, and Betty Kirby.
Known affectionately as "Granny," Barbara embraced the role with warmth and enthusiasm. She had a special gift for nurturing young children and cared for many over the years with patience and love that left lasting impressions on their lives.
Her faith was a cornerstone of her life. A devoted member of several congregations over the years—including Warren Baptist Church, North Baptist Church, Martinez Baptist Church, and West Acres Baptist Church—Barbara found joy in singing in the choir and participating in extended mission trips to China. Her spiritual devotion was evident not only in worship but also in how she lived each day—with kindness, humility, and service to others.
Barbara's interests were as vibrant as her spirit. She enjoyed swimming and reading during quiet moments but also expressed herself creatively through photography, sewing, painting, and playing the piano. These hobbies brought color to her days and often served as ways to connect more deeply with those around her.
