Barbara Ann Fernandez was born on August 28, 1949, to Ethel and Jesse Jackson. At a young age, she gave her life to Christ while attending Trinity Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Thomas, a faith that remained an important part of her life.
Barbara attended Pulaski Junior High School, where she proudly served as 9th grade President. She later graduated from Froebel High School in 1967. In 1968, she married Dexter Hoskins, and from this union five children were born, whom she loved dearly and devoted her life to raising.
Barbara worked diligently as a dedicated employee of U.S. Steel until her retirement. She later married Juan Fernandez, with whom she shared many years until his untimely passing in November 2011.
Barbara was known for her vibrant personality, her love for fashion, and her joy for life. To know her was truly to love her. She had a deep love for music, enjoyed shopping, dining out, and spending meaningful time with family and friends. She was famous for hosting legendary house parties and for making her well-loved tacos that brought everyone together.
Above all, Barbara's greatest joy and proudest accomplishment was her children. Her love for them was evident in everything she did.
Barbara Ann Fernandez will be remembered for her warmth, her style, her faith, and the unforgettable memories she created with those she loved. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and devotion that will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Ethel and Jesse Jackson; her husband, Juan Fernandez; her brothers, Terrance, Jerome, and James Jackson; and her sister, Dorothy Hogan.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children: Towana (Floyd) Woods, LaTanya Hoskins, Dexter Hoskins Jr., Damon Hoskins, and Darren Hoskins; and bonus son, Adonis Wilkins. She is also survived by her sister, Deborah Ham; her brother, Maurice (Madelyn) Jackson; her grandchildren, Ciara, DuJuan, Dexter Jr., Floyd Jr., Taylor, Julian, D'Cartia, Darion, Dymond, Shannon, DaKari, Darius, Destiny, Trezure, and Damar; 17 great-grandchildren; lifelong friends, Aline Joyce, Stephanie Boleware, and Lauretta Jennings; special cousins, Brad and June; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
