Barbara L Harvey

1932 - 2026

Barbara Lang Harvey, 93, of Lake Como, NY, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026. Known for her quick wit, remarkable resilience, and unwavering sense of responsibility, Barbara was a woman whose presence filled a room not through volume, but through character. She lived a life defined by integrity, compassion, and a determined spirit that inspired everyone privileged to know her.
Barbara was the eldest of nine children and grew up during the Great Depression—an experience that shaped her resourcefulness, her practicality, and her instinct to give more than she ever took. She carried these traits throughout her life.
Barbara's devotion to learning and service began early. She studied at the Grace and True Love Bible Institute, grounding her life in faith, compassion, and humility—values she carried into every role she embraced. Widowed at a young age and left to raise three children on her own, she faced challenges head on with grit and grace. She had a quiet strength that made others feel steady simply by being near her. At the same time, her sharp humor and playful remarks could dissolve tension in an instant. Her balance of strength and lightness made her both deeply admired and deeply loved.
Barbara's professional life was a testament to loyalty and determination. She devoted more than 40 years to the Bell Telephone Company, witnessing decades of technological change and forming lifelong friendships along the way. She took particular pride in her many perfect attendance awards—a remarkable achievement considering her daily commute often required navigating 50 miles of treacherous Central New York winter roads. Her colleagues respected her immensely; many became lifelong friends who continued to cherish her long after her well earned retirement. Her strong work ethic remained central to her identity as she transitioned into civic and public service, contributing her skills to several local boards and community organizations.
Barbara was a steadfast participant in local government and civic life, lending her voice, sharp mind, and sense of fairness to every organization she joined. As a member of the Summerhill Town Board and Planning Board, she played a meaningful role in shaping the community she loved. Her work with the Lake Como Lake Association and her service on the Cayuga County Planning Board - Water Quality Management Association reflected her passion for protecting the environment and preserving the natural beauty that brought her peace. In her years with the Cayuga County Board of Elections, she earned a reputation for integrity, diligence, and a firm belief in safeguarding the democratic process.
Beyond her professional and civic achievements, Barbara was a beloved figure in local athletics. Her reliability, camaraderie, and decades of commitment led to her induction into the Cortland Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame—an honor reflecting both her talent and the respect of her peers. When she wasn't rolling strikes, she was an avid golfer who could often be found one of the several local golf courses enjoying the game, the landscape, and the camaraderie that came with it.
Despite her numerous accomplishments, Barbara remained humble, grounded, and deeply genuine. She loved Lake Como and found solace in the serenity of the water. She delighted in simple pleasures: a good laugh, a well played game, a quiet view from her porch, a family gathering that stretched well into the evening. Barbara's love for the natural world and her community ran deep. She sought always to leave things better than she found them—for her family, her neighbors, and future generations.
Barbara leaves behind a family strengthened by her example: her daughter, Cynthia L. Davis, and her husband, Daryl; her son, David A. Harvey, and his wife, Barbara; and her son, Mark E. Harvey. She is also survived by five siblings; seven grandchildren; twenty eight great grandchildren; and seven great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David E. Harvey; her parents, Thelma (Edwards) and Walter Lang; three younger siblings; a daughter in law; and two grandchildren.
Her legacy lives on not just in the community she helped shape or the organizations she strengthened, but in the countless lives she touched with her warmth, wisdom, humor, and unshakable resilience.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Lake Como in June 2026. Please contact the family for details.
