We are saddened to announce the passing of Barbara C. Powell Harris, 73, of Sarasota, Florida, following a tragic accident.
Born in 1952 to Frank and Bobbie Sue Powell, Barbara was a graduate of Houlka High School and the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), where she earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees and completed PhD coursework.
A retiree of Sarasota Parks and Recreation, Barbara leaves a lasting legacy of environmental stewardship and community service. She was co-founder of the successful Orange Blossom Community Garden and served as a dedicated volunteer with organizations including the Multicultural Health Institute and Sarasota Waterkeepers. She also served as head of the Cocoanut Neighborhood Association, where she worked tirelessly to strengthen and uplift her community.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Kirk Harris; her parents; and her brother, Frank Powell. She is survived by her sisters, Emily Powell Burchett and Rhonda S. Powell; her aunt, Robbie K. Joiner; and seven nieces and nephews.
Barb lived her values fully and visibly through service, stewardship of the earth, generosity of spirit, and unwavering kindness. Her legacy lives on in the gardens she nurtured, the communities she strengthened, the many young people she mentored, and the countless lives she touched.
A Going Home Celebration will be held at 3:00 PM on February 22 at Crocker Memorial Church, 1260 12th Street in Sarasota. In lieu of flowers, please consider helping someone in need or donating to a charity of your choice in her honor.
